NFL rumors: Dwight Freeney lowers asking price

It's proven a tough free agent market for veteran defensive lineman and linebackers, as several either remain unsigned or had to take significant pay cuts to reach new agreements. An example of this has been Indianapolis Colts free agent Dwight Freeney, who has been forced to lower his asking price since the offseason began, according to Jeff Legwold of The Denver Post.

Legwold notes that when free agency opened, Freeney was asking for $8 million for the 2013 season. Since then, the figure dropped to $6 million, but teams such as the Denver Broncos -- who ultimately signed linebacker Shaun Phillips -- were still not interested at the reduced rate.

Greg Schiano: Josh Freeman is Buccaneers starting quarterback

There has been speculation that Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano has hesitations surrounding quarterback Josh Freeman. These rumors weren't quieted when the Bucs selected Mike Glennon in the third round of the NFL Draft last weekend. However, Schiano told reporters -- including Buccaneers.com -- that the team doesn't have a timeframe on Glennon, adding that Freeman is Tampa Bay's starting quarterback.

Giants rumors: Victor Cruz's contract a 'concern'

When the restricted free agency period passed and wide receiver Victor Cruz remained with the New York Giants, coach Tom Coughlin expected there to be a quick resolution to contract talks. Considering Cruz still hasn't signed his deal, Coughlin told WFAN yesterday that the situation "has to be a concern."

"It has to be a concern because when the restricted free agency period is over, you would hope that things would move fast. What we want is exactly what I said the other day. We want a win-win. We want Victor to be proud to be a New York Giant, proud of his contract," Coughlin said.

Cardinals rumors: Tyrann Mathieu requires guaranteed money

Yesterday it was reported that the Arizona Cardinals have a specific plan of action for talented but troubled defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, whom they selected in the third round of last weekend’s NFL Draft. Beyond subjecting Mathieu to random drug tests, the Cardinals also reportedly plan on giving the rookie a contract that includes no guaranteed money.

Steelers rumors: Landry Jones as Ben Roethlisberger’s eventual replacement?

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected quarterback Landry Jones in the fourth round of last weekend’s NFL Draft. The pick likely indicates that veteran backup Charlie Batch no longer has a roster spot with the team, but he believes it could mean more. Batch told Ron Cook of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Jones could be the Steelers’ heir apparent behind starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Are the Cardinals already re-thinking their 3rd round pick?

The Arizona Cardinals took a risk in last week's draft when they selected LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu. The all-star corner is thought to have an almost-infinite upside but his track record is stained by off-the-field issues. Being a slightly undersized CB - 5'9" 186lb - Mathieu would likely fill a need at safety on the Cardinals roster. He has the talent to be a first day starter but Arizona might already be rethinking their draft choice making a deal with the Chiefs that would bring notable slot corner Arenas to Arizona.

49ers sign British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye

There are always a few notable undrafted free agent signings across the NFL, but none carries with it the level of intrigue than that of former British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, who inked a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Okoye burst onto the scene during the super regional combine in Dallas. He’s a massive individual – standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds – but he amazed with his speed and quickness at the combine. He posted a 10-foot-5 broad jump, a 35-inch vertical jump and a 4.78 40-yard dash.

Patriots and Buccaneers swap running backs

Packers sign Aaron Rodgers to five-year, $110 million extension

While we were all focused on the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers quietly signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a five-year contract extension. Well, at least as quietly as you can when you’re making someone the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Rodgers new deal with the Packers is for $110 million over five years, shattering the six-year, $120.6 million deal that made Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco the highest-paid player for a short period of time. The agreement is worth $62 million guaranteed, and Rodgers will make $40 million in the first year.

The New York Jets took former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith with their first pick in the second round. New York stopped Smith’s slide, and at the same time the Jets put incumbent starter Mark Sanchez’s future in question.

The Jets were in contact with Sanchez through the process, so the selection wasn’t necessarily a surprise. However, it doesn’t mean that the future of the former first-round pick is any clearer than it would have been otherwise.

John Elway, A First Round of “Firsts”, and One Very Eery Similar Draft Selection

The 2013 first round of the draft has come and gone.  Dry your eyes though NFL fans.  Most “experts” would agree this was not a first round filled earth shattering talent.  With that said, the first round had plenty of firsts.  It was the first time two tackles were taken at the no. 1 and no. 2 overall selection since 1970 and the first time in over 50 years that a running back wasn’t taken in the first round.

Additionally, Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher was only the third offensive tackle selected No. 1 overall, joining Orlando Pace (1997) and Jake Long (2008), since the 1970 merger of the NFL and AFL. He’s also the first Mid American Conference (MAC) player to ever be selected no. 1 overall in NFL draft in history.

There are some serious questions surrounding Te'o. It's beyond the whole Catfish incident. It now appears that teams are concerned about his ability on the field.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Branden Albert has been the center of much trade speculation in the last several weeks. General manager John Dorsey told reporters -- including Steve Wyche of NFL.com -- that Albert could still be dealt prior to tonight's draft.

The Chiefs have a need at left tackle, the position Albert plays. While it may seem counter-intuitive to trade Albert in this situation, the team could fill the void by selecting one of the top tackles in tonight's draft. That would make Albert expendable, and Kansas City has received calls on the offensive lineman.

Adjusted team salary cap (pre-draft) - NFC

Going into the draft this Thursday teams financial records are under the microscope. As I addressed in a discussion last week, the acquisition of a rookie does not only cost the team a draft pick; but also costs the price of a rookie contract. The salary cap for the 2013 NFL season is $123,000,000. As of the 3rd week of April, most teams still have money to spend. There are a handful of teams who have already found themselves over-budget. At this point in the year teams have between 52 and 77 players on roster - this number will have to be cut down to 51 going into week 1 of the regular season.

The Seattle Seahawks' have given safety Kam Chancellor a four year extension. 25-year-old Chancellor has averaged over 6 tackles per game since earning the starting job and being elected to the Pro Bowl in 2011. He was drafted in the 5th round in 2010; 133rd overall.

Chancellor's extension will set his current contract to be worth $29,323,000 over the next 5 years; $17,000,000 guaranteed. The Seahawks have a solid group of CBs on roster and I'm sure they are looking to establish an equal level of surety in their safeties. The organization obviously thinks very highly of Kam's ability to anchor the position, putting his pay close to that of top earning safeties such as Antoine Bethea, Tyvon Branch, and Roman Harper.
