NFL rumors: Cardinals, Buccaneers, 49ers tied to Raiders’ Carson Palmer

The Oakland Raiders are deep in trade talks with the Seattle Seahawks regarding quarterback Matt Flynn. Even if those talks fall through, it’s become apparent that Carson Palmer’s tenure in Oakland is coming to an end. As a result, several teams – including the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – are reportedly showing interest in Palmer, while the veteran seems to have some interest in playing for the San Francisco 49ers.

Cowboys Rumors: Will Allen visiting

The Dallas Cowboys have been quiet during this free agency period, but that has not stopped the team welcoming talent to their facilities attempting to entice them.

The Cowboys plan to host free agent safety Will Allen on Monday, according to the team's official website.
The Cowboys possess just $102,000 in cap space and must find someone to play across from free safety Barry Church. Allen, 30, started seven games for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season and showed himself to be a productive run-stopper filling for Troy Polamalu. Still, Allen was never relied on as a consistent starter during his six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and three with Pittsburgh.
They also plan to host Justin Durant, 27, linebacker with the Detroit Lions who would give Dallas an experienced 4-3 strong-side linebacker having chalked up 103 tackles last season. He started 26 of 29 games in the Motor City since 2011, but it's concerning that Durant is on the open market for the third time in his career.

Jets Rumors: Bryan Thomas to retire

Free-agent outside linebacker Bryan Thomas was the longest-tenured New York Jets player last season, having appeared in 157 games over 11 seasons.

Yet, Thomas now 33 is contemplating retirement after doctors found a torn tendon in his shoulder when they operated on a pectoral muscle injury six weeks ago.  As Thomas explained to the New York Daily News:

“I haven’t even thought about it, to be honest with you, If I go now and sign for the vet minimum for one year, I wouldn’t even pass the physical right now.”

A part-time player in 2012, Thomas will have trouble drawing interest from teams on a one-year contract since he won't be able to participate in spring practices.

Jets Rumors: Geno Smith impresses

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said Friday that there's no "clear-cut favorite" to start at quarterback next season, promising only that Mark Sanchez will see "competition from day one."

Yet this has not stopped the Jets hosting potential first round draft picks quarterbacks for workouts, as they did on Sunday with West Virginia's Geno Smith, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York:

It was widely reported March 14 that Jets senior personnel executive Terry Bradway attended the West Virginia pro day, headlined by QB Geno Smith. Turns out that Bradway was accompanied by offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. The Jets' contingent had some private time with Smith, and they came away very impressed. The Jets have warmed to Smith since last month's scouting combine, where he didn't blow people away with his interviews. Some feel that may have been caused by fatigue (the combine can be a grind), but he certainly redeemed himself in the eyes of the Jets.

The New York Jets have the 9th overall pick in the draft this year, but will Geno Smith still be on the board by then is anyone's guess.  The Buffalo Bills are 8th and in need of a quarterback having cut supposed saviour Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the Arizona Cardinals may go knee-jerk with the 7th pick.

Although why any team would want to go high on a quarterback who is low on most draft expert boards is surprising, however, this is the New York Jets.

Rams Rumors: Quintin Mikell to re-sign

Free-agent safety Quintin Mikell was released by the St. Louis Rams this month because of his $9 million scheduled salary-cap hit, but the Rams would like to bring him back into the fold.
Coach Jeff Fisher told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week:
"He played very well for us last year. It's just one of those things that you have to do once you get in the process (of free agency) and you start making moves. But we have interest. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year."
The Rams are low on cap space, and teams generally don't want to pay premier money to safeties. Fisher said the team was negotiating with Mikell prior to his release, but simply ran out of time.
Mikell improved in coverage last season and recorded 101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles. With just Darian Stewart, Rodney McLeod and Matthew Daniels on the roster, the Rams might be forced to look toward the draft if a deal with Mikell can't be worked out

Dez Bryant: People won't watch football anymore

There are contrasting and contradicting thoughts across the NFL about new safety rules.  Some players have come out and said the NFL will not exist in the future if safety is not addressed.  However, there are players who think the safety rules are going too far, and perhaps the league won't exists because people just won't watch the games anymore.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is in the latter category.  With the potential for the NFL to implement a new offensive penalty for ball-carriers lowering their helmets, Bryant spoke out on what he thinks will happen to the league if these rules continue.

Titans would like to let Jake Locker use legs more, but injuries a concern

The NFL is moving toward the read option across the board.  Teams that do not have a quarterback who can run are falling behind (sans those with established, Super Bowl winning QBs).  So it's no surprise the Tennessee Titans would like to see Jake Locker run more.  However, they are concerned about him getting hurt.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean, the team is looking at the possibility of having Locker run the read option more.  They are running through scenarios, but the biggest concerns is the heightened potential for injury.

Where will Ahmad Bradshaw land?

Ahmad Bradshaw is the most appealing running back still on the free agency market, in a generally bad time for running backs with not one running back projected to be picked in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft.

As he recovers from the serious foot injury that curtailed his season, and forced the New York Giants to cut him from their roster.  Bradshaw is of the opinion that he is worth some value to a team, but he will not visit or train for any team until the troublesome foot fully heals

Speaking to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Bradshaw said:

"There are a lot of teams out there, but there are a couple teams that are interested, so I've heard. Pittsburgh, the Jets and the Packers, which are teams that I feel like need a running back, that I could help. Like I said, it’s a process. I just want to take it slow."

Lets look at those three teams needs:

Packers: Coach Mike McCarthy hinted the Packers want more of a 1-2 punch at running back in 2013. At this stage, DuJuan HarrisAlex Green, and James Starks are all in the mix. Bradshaw could fit well as a versatile veteran that excels in the passing game.

Steelers: They kicked the tires of Beanie Wells, but haven't signed him. That shows a willingness to add a veteran rather than fill their need through the 2013 NFL Draft. The Steelers need to upgrade from Jonathan Dwyer and restricted free agent Isaac Redman.
Jets: With Shonn Greene now bugging Chris Johnson on the Tennessee Titans, the Jets have Bilal Powell, Joe McKnight, and free-agent pickup Mike Goodson on the roster. Goodson's signing could make Bradshaw superfluous.
Whilst Bradshaw did run for 1000 yards last year, he is only 27 years old so is in need of one last big contract before his great gifts become surplus to requirements as his age starts to catch up with the injuries that are already there.

All three stated sides are impressive, yet I feel there may be a twist in the tail and a return to the G-Men cannot be ruled out fully.

Saints Rumors: Victor Butler to visit

It seems a lot of defensive players are visiting New Orleans, although Mardi Gras finished over a month ago.
Another one to visit is Victor Butler, the free agent linebacker according to the Times-Picayune:

The Saints are looking for outside linebackers as they convert to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Butler, who is 6 feet 2 and 245 pounds, played under Ryan with the Dallas Cowboys. The 25-year-old had 25 tackles and three sacks last season. He was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys out of Oregon State in 2009. Butler has already visited the Steelers during free agency, but left Pittsburgh without a contract.

The 25-year-old defender has the Saints high on his list despite a crowded house at the edge rusher position, where Butler would compete for snaps with Will SmithMartez Wilson and Junior Galette. Butler recorded 25 tackles and three sacks last season and figures to be more of a role player, but his experience in Ryan's defense makes this a potential match.

Pacman Jones stays in Cincinnati

Despite being one of the most contentious players in NFL history, it seems Adam 'Pacman' Jones has finally made a good impression on someone, signing a three year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.
After the free agency flurry calmed down the Bengals must take credit for getting value out of the versatile Jones, he did a very nice job as a return man and in coverage last season as a nickel cornerback. He's a role player, but he played that role very well in 2012.
It wasn't so long ago that Jones was viewed as a lost cause. His off-field troubles were well documented, and his on-field play wasn't overly respected. The Bengals gave Jones another chance, and he's responded with solid veteran play. There are only six cornerbacks from the 2005 draft currently signed with a team, and Jones is one of them.
The Bengals have done a solid job retaining veterans like Jones, Wallace Gilberry and franchise player Michael Johnson. The next target will be right tackle Andre Smith.

Bernard Pollard agrees terms with Titans

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Bernard Pollard has agreed to terms with the team. The free-agent safety told ESPN he agreed to sign a one-year deal with Titans after being cut by the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month.
On the heels of allowing more points than any team in NFL history in 2012, the Titans have made their secondary a priority in free agency. Tennessee also signed George Wilson last month after he was cut by the Buffalo Bills, giving defensive coordinator Jerry Gray a pair of veteran safeties.
Pollard -- a notorious hard-hitter -- figures to start across from Michael Griffin, while Wilson will push for time. It's important to note that Pollard graded 68th on a list of 85 qualifying safeties last season, according to ProFootballFocus, so this resembles more of a patch than an impact signing.
Coach Mike Munchak, on thin ice in Tennessee, is taking an aggressive approach to restocking his defense. If there's any gas left in the tank, Pollard and Wilson should pay dividends for the Titans.
Yet for all these invaluable additions to the defence, shouldn't the offence be addressed pretty soon.

Saints sign TE Ben Watson

After releasing David Thomas last month, the New Orleans Saints were in the market for a No. 2 tight end to complement Jimmy Graham, and on Monday they signed veteran Ben Watson to a three-year contract
Although Watson is just a borderline starter at this stage of his career, he makes for a fine second fiddle to Graham. The 32-year-old averaged 558 yards per in three seasons with the Cleveland Browns after spending the first six years of his career in New England.
An upgrade on the increasingly brittle Thomas, Watson can step in and provide a valuable weapon down the seam and in the red zone should Graham miss time with an injury -- Graham did miss some time due to a wrist problem, which required surgery at the end of the season.
With Robert Meachem gone and free agent Devery Henderson likely to depart also, Watson gives head coach Sean Payton the option of using more two tight-end sets as opposed to three- and four-wide formations.
Whilst no team can compete with the one-two punch of the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski-Aaron Hernandez tag team at the position, the Saints can now lay claim to the second best tight end partnership in the NFL.

Bengals Rumors: Ryan Fitzpatrick meets Marvin Lewis

Ryan Fitzpatrick got cut from Buffalo Bills, but he is in need of a landing spot to re-build his career.  One place could be the team he left to join the Bills in 2009 - the Cincinnati Bengals own website reports that Fitzpatrick met up with head coach Marvin Lewis at the NFL Annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Fitzpatrick is one of the few top quarterbacks available on the free agency market, yet there are few places he can expect to start at and so the possibility of a back-up position to a younger quarterback might be more realistic.

The Bengals require a back-up for starter Andy Dalton as last year's reserve Bruce Gradkowski left in the off-season to join the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Lewis and the Bengals' organization know what he brings to the table, and according to the team's website, team president Mike Brown -- who like Fitzpatrick is a former Ivy League quarterback -- has "high regard" for Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick couldn't be a difference-maker in Buffalo, but if he has to play a series or even a game as a backup, he won't lose games either. That stability is exactly what a team with playoff aspirations - having been one and done the last two years in a difficult AFC North division - like the Bengals needs.

Cardinals Rumors: Josh Cribbs close to deal

Free agent and former Cleveland Brown Josh Cribbs is close to signing an agreement with the Arizona Cardinals and a move to the desert, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer.

The Cardinals were one of five teams that reportedly expressed interest in Cribbs before free agency opened. Cribbs had wanted to end his career with the Browns, but the new regime were not serious about re-signing him.
In his eight seasons on the Browns, Cribbs never became dynamic as a receiver. His role was heavily reduced last season when he had only seven receptions. Still, he went to two Pro Bowls as a returner and can contribute as a Wildcat runner.
During his time with the Browns, Cribbs returned eight kickoffs for touchdowns, which is tied for first in NFL history with Leon Washington. He also amassed 12,169 combined kickoff and punt return yards, becoming just the sixth player in NFL history to reach the 12,000-yard plateau. In the season finale against Pittburgh, he surpassed Dennis Northcutt to become the Browns' all-time leader in punt return yardage with 2,154 yards.

Cribbs, originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State in 2005, was known for sacrificing his body on every play and for dishing out hits on kick coverage as well as he could absorb them.

Whilst the Cardinals already have Patrick Peterson on kick-offs and punt returns, Cribbs role may be diminished in that respect yet new Head Coach Bruce Arians will welcome an impact player on his weak offence who can motivate young players.

Packers Rumors: Jermichael Finley to stay

Following on from the departure of Greg Jennings from Wisconsin to Minnesota, there is some good news for the Packers fans on the offensive front.  With news of his future uncertain, Jermichael Finley added clarity to his destination this off-season with the Packers confirming he will remain a Packer, writes the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

Through Jennings, the Packers have been able to gain leverage on Finley. As Finley’s market worsens, the tight end may need to accept a pay cut and hope to hit free agency next off-season rather than settle on a below-average deal somewhere else this off-season.

Head Coach, Mike McCarthy talked about reducing the volume of plays to help out Finley and the rest of the Packers' offense. McCarthy is hoping less is more with the offense; it appears that Finley won't have to take less than his scheduled $8.25 million in 2013.

The Packers owe Finley a $3 million roster bonus on March 27. Expect Finley to get the bonus and play out his contract year on the Packers.

Did Greg Jennings reject New England?

Greg Jennings may have left Green Bay for an in-division rival in the Minnesota Vikings and yes for the team that offered him the most money - five years, $47.5 million, $18 million guaranteed - but he went to the team that made him feel wanted the most.

And yet on paper you can see why some people feel this is a selfish act to go for the money, as it is being reported he rejected a $8 million dollar offer from the Packers to return to Green Bay and even a $6 million offer from the New England Patriots reports Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Packers could have all but guaranteed Jennings' return by applying the one-year franchise tag worth $10.537 million.
When the club didn't, Jennings became an unrestricted free agent Tuesday afternoon and appeared eager to find a new home.
Therefore Jennings left behind the opportunity to continue working with Aaron Rodgers or pass up the chance to play with the star-studded offense in Boston with Tom Brady.
Whilst you can see the logic behind Jennings' decision as this is his last major contract as a 29 year old - yet the contrast between the talent levels of the three teams mentioned is startling.
Would you rather receive a pass from Brady and Rodgers or Christian Ponder and (possibly) Matt Cassel.

Giants News: Brandon Myers agrees terms

The pieces all fall into place now, as the New York Giants decision to let tight end Marcellus Bennett leave after one season, becomes clearer as they agreed terms with Oakland Raider Brandon Myers on Saturday, as reported by Mike Garafolo of USA Today.

Myers spent the first four years of his career with the Raiders. In 2012, he hauled in 79 receptions for 806 yards and four touchdowns. According to Football Outsiders, he ranked sixth in total value among all NFL tight ends (just ahead of Vernon Davis and Jimmy Graham; Bennett was 14th).
A former sixth-round pick out of Iowa, Myers could assume a similar role in New York. Bennett was second on the team in receptions after Victor Cruz in 2012. The year before, Jake Ballard, Travis Beckum and Bear Pascoe combined for 55 receptions.
The lesson: The Giants like utilizing their tight ends, and Myers proved to be a capable pass-catcher a season ago. In his previous 12 starts, however, he managed just 32 catches. So it's fair to wonder if he can maintain that productivity.

The numbers above make clear that whomever is the tight end can expect some receptions, but perhaps Eli Manning has the first recognisable tight end since Jeremy Shockey he can rely upon.

Saints Rumors: Nnamdi Asomugha visiting

The Philadelphia Eagles cut the cornerback after two lackluster seasons last week. He signed a five-year, $60 million free agent contract before the 2011 season as part of the "Dream Team" moves. Asomugha was considered on par with Darrelle Revis before the failed experiment with the EaglesHe's due to visit the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, according to Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

The thought/hope is that the Eagles didn't play to Asomugha's strengths, which were that of a dominant press cornerback with the Raiders. Asomugha was a three-time Pro Bowl corner on the Oakland Raiders.
Ryan brings his aggressive scheme to the Saints in an attempt to fix the No. 31 scoring defense that ranked dead last in yards allowed. If anyone knows how to best use Asomugha, it's Ryan. The two were together for five seasons(2004 to 2008) when Ryan was the Raiders' defensive coordinator.
Asomugha, 31, has reached the second half of his career, but his body isn't breaking down. The 2013 season could be the last chance to show he still has elite skills.
The San Francisco 49ers also have shown an interest in Asomugha.

Matt Cassel understands his role

Matt Cassel is no longer a starting quarterback in the NFL.  Since his departure from the Kansas City Chiefs, Cassel has landed with the Minnesota Vikings.  Christian Ponder is the Vikings' starter.  That much has been made clear to Cassel.

Cassel was once celebrated as a diamond in the rough.  When Tom Brady went down with a knee injury and Cassel replaced him, Cassel was impressive.  However, he struggled when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Now, he will serve a back-up role with the Vikings.

Elvis Dumervil released because of a late fax

The Denver Broncos and Elvis Dumervil had agreed to a reduced salary that would have allowed the team to avoid cutting him.  However, Dumervil's agent didn't get the paperwork in to the Broncos in time and the team had no choice but to cut the defensive end.

According to ESPN league sources, Dumervil's agent faxed in the paperwork at 4:06 PM EST.  Had the Broncos not cut Dumervil by then, his $12 million salary would have been guaranteed.  The team could not afford to allow that to happen, so they were forced to cut Dumervil.

This is what team president John Elway had to say:

Greg Jennings signs with Vikings

Just ask the man.  He's not old.  Greg Jennings, who has bounced from the Green Bay Packers to the Minnesota Vikings, has had an injury-plagued recent history.  He's getting up there in age, too.  But don't tell him that.  The Minnesota Vikings don't seem to mind either.

The Vikings signed Jennings to a five-year, $47.5 million deal says Kareem Copeland of NFL.com.  While the Vikings obviously think Jennings can help, there have been those who doubt his ability to contribute long-term.  To those people, Jennings insists he is not old.

Patriots sign Amendola, replace Welker

The New England Patriots' wide receiver debacle has began and ended all within a matter of hours but, the fallout from the deal has yet to be fully determined. New England quarterback Tom Brady restructured his contract late last month to apparently make salary-cap room for the Patriots to offer star wide receiver Wes Welker a solid, new contract but, that didn't happen. Welker departed from New England on Wednesday to sign with Denver for what some people believe was a complete bargain. Denver signed a two-year deal with Welker for $12 million after a source from the Broncos revealed that he declined a two-year, $10 million contract with incentives from the Patriots, reported NFL.com's Albert Breer. In an interview with the Associated Press John Elway, Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Denver Broncos said:

"Anytime you can take a player from a team you have to compete against, it helps, especially the caliber of Wes Welker," ... "New England is there year in and year out, and that's a team we have to beat to get where we want to get."

Recovering quickly from the Welker fiasco, New England went on to sign fifth year wideout Danny Amendola, formerly of the St. Louis Rams, to a five-year contract worth $31 million, $10 million of which is guaranteed, reported Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. A side by side comparison of Amendola's and Welker's contract undeniably shows that there was an ulterior motive in the Pats contract negotiations with Welker and provides us with enough evidence to say that the receiver's time in New England was just up. Amid all the uproar that these two deals have caused Amendola tweeted a simple, concise statement that could very well shield him from the barrage of questions from reporters and fury of the fans.

This will definitely not be the last we here of the chaos that these deals have brought to the sports realm. It is clear that succeeding the legacy of Welker in New England will be tough stuff for Amendola. Welker had over 1,000 yards receiving in five of the last six seasons, Amendola had only reached 689 yards receiving back in 2010, his second year in the league, and has a history of injuries. Danny Amendola has only scored seven receiving touchdowns since the start of his NFL career, Wes Welker caught six passes for touchdowns last season. The stats speak for themselves.

Broncos 'Buck' in Free Agency, signs host of players

Five players , one team, one dream ... The Super Bowl. Wes Welker, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Terrance Knighton, Kevin Vickerson, Stewart Bradley,  and the Denver Broncos franchise are all looking forward to serious Super Bowl contention in the 2013 NFL season.

The franchise sent a powerful, 'look out' message to the league on Wednesday with their groundbreaking signings of wide receiver Welker from the Patriots to a two-year deal and cornerback Rodgers-Cromartie from the Eagles to a one-year deal to add to quarterback Peyton Manning's arsenal.

Welker joins the already formidable duo of Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker in Denver after they all eclipsed the 1,000 yards receiving mark in the 2012 season, with Welker gaining his fifth 1,000 yards plus catching year in the past six seasons. The precise arm of Peyton Manning will only increase the threat that the Broncos pose to any defense with the already intimidating presence of Denver's receiving corps. Manning threw for his second best overall passing yards total of his career this past regular season with 4,659 yards. To accompany his passing yards total Peyton also accounted for 37 passing touchdowns last season, also his second best career total, reports NFL.com.

Cornerback Rodgers-Cromartie, defensive tackles Knighton and Vickerson, and linebacker Bradley pose a new threat to opposing offenses with their addition to a Denver defense that was ranked 12th in the league in 2012. Rodgers-Cromartie's brief history with the Eagles was bittersweet with the defensive back only experiencing short bursts of success, although he did lead Philly's defense in passes defended, writes NFL.com's Dan Hanzus. Knighton is said to be a good fit for Denver defense because of his past success with the Jaguars under coach Jack Del Rio, now the Bronco's defensive coordinator. His right hand man will be Kevin Vickerson, the eight year veteran entering his fourth season with the Broncos, who had 28 tackles last year. Stewart Bradley, the former Cardinal, comes in it at the middle linebacker position but, started just once in two seasons in Arizona and underperformed his stellar contract that could have earned him $25 million, according to Andrew Mason of the DenverBroncos.com.

Denver's signings and new terms agreements leaves many wondering if they can realize their dream of winning a Super Bowl and turn it into reality. The Bronco's last Super Bowl appearance came 15 years ago when Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway led them to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in '97 and '98.
