Ahmad Bradshaw is the most appealing running back still on the free agency market, in a generally bad time for running backs with not one running back projected to be picked in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft.
As he recovers from the serious foot injury that curtailed his season, and forced the New York Giants to cut him from their roster. Bradshaw is of the opinion that he is worth some value to a team, but he will not visit or train for any team until the troublesome foot fully heals
Speaking to the
New Jersey Star-Ledger, Bradshaw said:
"There are a lot of teams out there, but there are a couple teams that are interested, so I've heard. Pittsburgh, the Jets and the Packers, which are teams that I feel like need a running back, that I could help. Like I said, it’s a process. I just want to take it slow."
Lets look at those three teams needs:
Packers: Coach Mike McCarthy hinted the Packers want more of a 1-2 punch at running back in 2013. At this stage, DuJuan Harris, Alex Green, and James Starks are all in the mix. Bradshaw could fit well as a versatile veteran that excels in the passing game.
Steelers: They kicked the tires of Beanie Wells, but haven't signed him. That shows a willingness to add a veteran rather than fill their need through the 2013 NFL Draft. The Steelers need to upgrade from Jonathan Dwyer and restricted free agent Isaac Redman.
Jets: With Shonn Greene now bugging Chris Johnson on the Tennessee Titans, the Jets have Bilal Powell, Joe McKnight, and free-agent pickup Mike Goodson on the roster. Goodson's signing could make Bradshaw superfluous.
Whilst Bradshaw did run for 1000 yards last year, he is only 27 years old so is in need of one last big contract before his great gifts become surplus to requirements as his age starts to catch up with the injuries that are already there.
All three stated sides are impressive, yet I feel there may be a twist in the tail and a return to the G-Men cannot be ruled out fully.
