While the New England Patriots haven’t been tied to
Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent Emmanuel Sanders since hosting him
soon after the free agency period began, Field Yates of ESPN Boston notes that
the team could still express interest in the wide out.
In order to make an attempt at acquiring Sanders, the
Patriots would have to sign him to an offer sheet. Since they have yet to do
so, it’s been assumed that they are content moving forward with Danny Amendola
and the rest of their wide receivers.
However, the Patriots have some time before a decision on
whether or not to sign Sanders to an offer sheet has to be made. The Steelers
have five days after April 19 to decide whether or not to match any offers for
Sanders.
Pittsburgh has placed a third-round tender on the wide
receiver, meaning they would get the Patriots’ third-round draft choice in 2013
if they don’t match. Pittsburgh has a tight cap at the moment, the New England
could be holding off on a move until it sees what else the Steelers do this
offseason.
