Cowboys receiver Miles Austin returns to practice and will likely play against the Redskins

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday.
This is great news for the Cowboys passing attack, which had over 500 yards against the Denver Broncos last weekend. Austin, has missed the last two games due to a hamstring injury and will play on Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Head coach Jason Garrett spoke about what he has seen in practice from Austin per the Cowboys website.

"He 'd been running well the last couple of days. He got through practice for the most part farily healthy."

Cowboys used rookie wide receiver Terrence Williams and had 11 receptions for 222 yards against the Broncos. This is a great sign for the Cowboys offense with Austin returning and the emergence of Williams will only benefit quarterback Tony Romo. Additionally, Cowboys have two divisional games coming up Sunday at home against 1-3 Redskins and next weekends game at Lincoln Financial Field against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Austin, joined the Cowboys as a undrafted player in 2006 and returned kickoffs as a rookie. He returned 3 kickoffs for 136 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown return in a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. Furthermore, in his career he has 292 receptions for 4,362 yards and 34 touchdowns. Austin, made his first start on October 11, 2009 against the Kansas City Chiefs and broke a Cowboys receiving record with 10 receptions for 250 yards. A record that once belonged to Bob Hayes, who had 246 receiving yards in 1966 against the Redskins.

Fantasy Football: Week 6 start 'em sit 'em WRs

Start Vincent Jackson vs. Eagles. The Eagles are allowing a league-high 1207 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns to opposing wide-outs. I know that the Buccs are working with a fresh, rookie QB but they have shown that they have faith in him after severing ties with Freeman. Both Jackson and Mike Williams are good fantasy starts assuming they are both healthy.

Start DeAndre Hopkins vs. Rams. This is a particularly interesting matchup. The Rams have allowed 8 receiving TDs to opposing wide-outs in 2013 (2nd-NFC) and the Texans’ primary redzone guy (Owen Daniels) was placed on IR this week. Stud WR Andre Johnson has only caught 1 pass this season in the redzone and it resulted in -1 yards, not a score. On the other hand, DeAndre Hopkins has scored in the redzone and seems to be the team’s go-to-WR in scoring territory. Don’t expect monster numbers from this up-and-coming rookie, but he should find the endzone and is a good play at Flex this week.

Giants' Injury Report: David Wilson, David Baas, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas

The New York Giants venture into "The Windy City" for this week's edition of Thursday Night Football to take on the Chicago Bears. With an 0-5 record and a quick turnaround from Sunday's 36-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, all signs point to disaster for Big Blue. The Giants were banged up already, and the short week has not done them any favors as far as getting healthy goes.

Running back David Wilson (neck), center David Baas (neck), tight end Adrien Robinson (foot), safety Cooper Taylor (shoulder), cornerbacks Jayron Hosley (hamstring) and Corey Webster (groin) were all held out of practice this week and will be inactive for tonight's game.

Fantasy Football: Week 6 start 'em sit 'em RBs

Start DeMarco Murray vs. Redskins. Washington is allowing 5 yards per carry to opposing running backs. In two career starts against the Redskins Murray averages 95 yards per game and has caught a total of 8 passes.

Start DeAngelo Williams vs. Vikings. The Vikings run-stop has made some progress since letting up record-shattering fantasy numbers to the Lions’ running backs in week 1, but their defense leaves much to be desired in this area allowing 125 yards per game to running backs.

Start Arian Foster vs. Rams.

Start Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Broncos.

Start Matt Forte vs. Giants.

Sit Frank Gore vs. Cardinals.

Sit BenJarvus Green-Ellis vs. Bills.

Sit Eddie Lacy vs. Ravens.

Sit Ryan Mathews vs. Colts.

Sit Chris Johnson vs. Seahawks.

Fantasy Football: Week 6 start 'em sit 'em QBs

Start Andrew Luck vs. Chargers. San Diego has allowed 12 touchdowns to opposing QBs this year to accompany over 335 yards per game. The only QB to not score multiple times against the Chargers this year is Jake Locker, and Andrew Luck is coming off of a strong week against the Seahawks.

Start Robert Griffin III vs. Cowboys. RGIII put up over 500 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Cowboys in 2 games last year. The Cowboys secondary also seems to be the worst in football; allowing a league-high 15 touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks in addition to 345 passing yards per game.

Packers injury updates: Clay Matthews, Brad Jones

Most of the injury-related attention the Green Bay Packers have received has been given to Pro-Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews. While Matthews won't be suiting up for this weekend's contest against the Baltimore Ravens, he's not the only linebacker the Packers will be missing. Head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters -- including Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- that Brad Jones will also be out this week.

Lions' Calvin Johnson could be game-time decision

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was the surprise scratch of last weekend's slate of games. Throughout last week, Johnson was expected to play despite being hampered by a knee injury. Detroit ultimately decided to keep him out against the Green Bay Packers, but Johnson said he believed he'd be back before too long.

Johnson was once again sidelined during yesterday's practice session, but this shouldn't be overly concerning unless he continues to be absent from practice later into the week. Coach Jim Schwartz said Johnson is improving, and the All-Pro has previously missed Wednesday practice sessions before taking the field on game day.

The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that they have parted ways with veteran safety Will Allen.

The 10-year veteran signed a one-year deal with Dallas over the offseason after spending the last three years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Allen began the season as the Cowboys' starting strong safety but after a tough start to the season, rookie J.J. Wilcox jumped past him on the depth chart. Allen's pass coverage was exposed by Eli Manning and the New York Giants offense in Week 1. Despite beating the Giants 36-31, Allen and the Cowboys secondary gave up 450 yards passing.

Jets’ Kellen Winslow frustrated about playing time, Antwan Barnes out for the year

Oakland Raiders could add QB

As it stands right now the Oakland Raiders only have two quarterbacks on the roster.  The Raiders recently cut third string quarterback Matt Flynn leaving only Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin.  Pryor has looked really impressive early in the season, but has already had to miss one game due to a concussion.  The Raiders may want to add a veteran quarterback just in case another injury happens.

It now looks like the Falcons could also be without their other Pro Bowl wide out, Roddy White. Jason Cole of the National Football Post believes White is "50-50, at best" to suit up for the Falcons after their bye as a result of the hamstring injury he suffered against the Jets.

Despite promising to be back for Week 6, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin announced Tuesday that running back David Wilson has been ruled out of this weeks edition of "Thursday Night Football" against the Chicago Bears.

Wilson tweeted after Sunday's 36-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that he was feeling good and would "be back next week." However, Coughlin said Monday that Wilson experienced "tingling" in his neck after taking the hit that forced him to exit Sunday's game after the last play of the first quarter.

Fantasy Football: Closer look at target statistics

How many times a quarterback is throwing the ball to your receiver, tight end, or running back can be a good reflection of how important that player is to the offense. Players who are targeted more frequently have their quarterback's trust, which teams need to win football games. In addition to target count, catch percentage is important to consider when looking at who you can trust to start on your team going forward.

Fantasy Football: Week 6 hot waiver moves

The Falcons and Dolphins are off this week; I don't mean to suggest that the Dolphins had any viable fantasy starters when they were playing anyways. If you have been starting guys like Matt Ryan or Julio Jones you're going to have to look elsewhere for help at these positions. Also, not a whole bunch of injuries this week going to rattle your roster: Owen Daniels, the biggest heart-breaker among top performers.

Texans' Gary Kubiak leaving door open for QB change

After Sunday night's ugly loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Matt Schaub is still the team's starting quarterback. He reiterated that point yesterday, but he added a line that leaves the door open for him to potentially make a change at the quarterback position. Kubiak told reporters -- including John McClain of the Houston Chronicle -- that he's "evaluating everything to see what gives us the best chance to win."

Packers rumors: Matt Flynn unlikely to return

The Oakland Raiders recently parted ways with Matt Flynn less than a season after signing him to be their starting quarterback. There's since been speculation on where Flynn could land, and one of those potential places was Green Bay, Flynn's former team. However, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy all but shot that speculation down yesterday, telling reporters -- including Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com -- that he's comfortable with his current quarterback situation.
“Personally, I’m very happy with the quarterback room, the way it looks, the people in it,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. “Obviously Matt was a Packer, very fond of Matt and his time here. As far as any roster moves and things like that, I really don’t have any comment on, but I do like Seneca Wallace. I like what he’s done since he’s been here. I feel very good about our quarterback room.”

Browns' Josh Gordon still subject of trade talks

The Cleveland Browns, tied for first in the AFC North, are the feel good story in this early 2013 NFL campaign.  Most thought the organization had closed the Dawg Pound once they traded star running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts a few weeks ago.

I always felt that was their intention, to ride this season out and start rebuilding for 2014.  A funny thing happened on the way to that plan, the Browns started winning.  Winning or not, the Browns still want to look to rebuild for 2014 and as Chris Wesseling of NFL.com tells us, the Browns are still entertaining offers on star wide receiver, Josh Gordon.

After scoring the Falcons’ first touchdown, Snelling ultimately had to leave the game with a head injury. Atlanta later determined that ailment to be a concussion, ruling the running back out for the remainder of the contest.

Eagles vs. Giants Injury Report: Chris Snee, David Baas, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Fletcher Cox

This Sunday a classic NFC East rivalry is renewed when the New York Giants welcome the Philadelphia Eagles to town for a game which both teams desperately need to win. The Eagles have an overwhelming advantage in depth for this game. The Giants have quadruple the amount of players on their Week 5 injury report than the Eagles do.

The Eagles once again have a very short and sweet injury list, just the way they like it. Free safety Patrick Chung has been limited in practice this week with a shoulder injury. Chung will likely be a game-time decision for Sunday's game. He is listed as questionable. Cornerback Brandon Boykin is also dealing with a shoulder injury. Boykin was limited on Wednesday but fully participated in Thursday and Friday's practices. He is listed as probable for Sunday. Defensive end Fletcher Cox (hamstring) was a full participant in Friday's practice, and will likely play Sunday. Cox is also listed as probable.

Week 5 Preview: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants

Sunday October 6th 1:00 PM (EST)

Line: Giants by 4

Although the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants have both experienced disappointing starts to their seasons, that does not mean the stakes will be any lower than they've been in the past when these two rivals clash on Sunday. With the Dallas Cowboys sitting atop the NFC East standings at 2-2, the division is still wide open for the taking. Neither team is fond of one another to say the least and both are in desperate need of a win to stay in the mix of things in the NFC East, so buckle up and get ready for a classic rivalry to be renewed here in Week 5.

The Eagles offense has experienced a number of growing pains under head coach Chip Kelly's new system which revolves around a fast paced no-huddle attack. However, I expect quarterback Michael Vick and company to get back on track against a Giants defense which has yielded the most points in the NFL through one quarter of the season. The Eagles simply have too many offensive weapons for the Giants to handle. If wide receiver Desean Jackson decides he wants to show up Sunday, he will burn the Giants secondary and have a very productive day. Running back LeSean McCoy will exploit the Giants front seven, which has not been able to compensate for the weaknesses in their secondary the way it has in years past. The addition of linebacker Jon Beason will help, but it won't be enough for the Giants to keep up with Kelly's high octane offense.

Jaguars insist team not shopping players

Following the Jacksonville Jaguars trading left tackle Eugene Monroe to the Ravens earlier in the week, speculation around the league was that any number of players on the Jacksonville roster could be on the trading block. On Thursday, Jaguars' general manager David Caldwell attempted to put those rumors to bed. Per a report by ESPN's Michael DiRocco, Caldwell went as far as addressing the Jaguars' most desirable pieces, starting running back Maurice Jones-Drew and linebacker Paul Posluszny:

I had good talks with Poz and Mojo today, and they're not going anywhere.. We feel good about those guys being here. Nor do they want to go anywhere. They're part of this team, and we're excited about having them a part of this team.

Patriots' Rob Gronkowski unlikely to play Sunday

Those hoping for a return of New England Patriots superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski might have to wait a little longer. Gronkowski has yet to return from offseason back and forearm surgeries and ProFootballTalk reports the current outlook is bleak on Gronkowski's chances of suiting up this Sunday:

A league source tells PFT's Mike Florio that Gronkowski is currently viewed as unlikely to play in Sunday's game at Cincinnati.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley out of practice again Friday

The availability of New England Patriots running back Stevan Ridley for Sunday's contest against the Cincinnati Bengals remains in question. Ridley is being slowed by a knee injury sustained in last Sunday night's win in Atlanta. As reported by NESN.com, Ridley was absent again from practice on Friday.

Stevan Ridley was missing for the third straight day at practice on Friday morning... LeGarrette Blount may get a fair share of carries on Sunday afternoon.

With McFadden's status for Sunday in doubt, Raiders head coach Dennis Allen provided some hope he can still be active and in service for Oakland this week, via Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times:

Coach Dennis Allen said Darren McFadden doesn't necessarily have to practice Friday if he is to play Sunday.

UPDATE: Browns' Injury Update: Brian Hoyer, Desmond Bryant, Chris Ogbonnaya

Bills’ Jairus Byrd wanted to play Thursday night against Browns

Buffalo Bills safety, Jairus Byrd, and his 2013 NFL season started out full of turbulence.  In the weeks since he signed his franchise tender and reported to Bills' camp, Byrd has yet to play a meaningful down of football.  As Josh Alper of NBCSports reports, Byrd wanted to play Thursday night but was grounded by his head coach.

The Lions add depth, sign Kevin Ogletree

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a series of unexpected moves this week, as they cut two players who appeared to be fixtures on the roster prior to the start of the season. By now, of course, we all know the long and sad story of Josh Freeman's demise in Tampa Bay, but an under the radar release was perhaps more of a surprise.

Atlanta Falcons Injury Report: Sam Baker, Akeem Dent OUT for Week 5

The Atlanta Falcons are off to a disappointing 1-3 start and already sit three-games back of the 4-0 New Orleans Saints in the NFC South.  While injuries are a huge part of the game, it seems to be a recurring theme in Atlanta.

According to NFL.com, left tackle Sam Baker and linebacker Akeem Dent have officially been ruled out of Monday night’s contest against the New York Jets.  Dent left Sunday’s game, a 30-23 loss to New England with an ankle injury and Baker also exited early with a knee injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers release Josh Freeman

The writing has been on the wall for the past few weeks and on Wednesday, the Buccaneers made it official.  Quarterback Josh Freeman has been granted his release and is free to sign with any other team.

Freeman, the 17th overall pick in 2009 was expected to be the franchise quarterback for the Bucs.  The idea of Freeman leaving Tampa Bay began over the offseason when Tampa Bay did not extend an offer sheet to Freeman whom was in the final year of his rookie contract.

Panthers trade Jon Beason to Giants

The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers have agreed to a trade that would send linebacker Jon Beason to New York in exchange for a late-round draft pick, according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. The deal is pending the result of Beason's physical, which he will take Friday when he flies up to New York.

Given Beason's track record with injuries, it is not a forgone conclusion that he will pass his physical, but if he does, he will be a Giant. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker did not miss a game in his first four seasons, but has only played in seven games since tearing his Achillies tendon in Week 1 of the 2011 season.

Fantasy Football: Week 5 start 'em sit 'em WRs

Start Victor Cruz vs. Eagles. In four career game against the Eagles, Cruz averages 6 catches for 100 yards per game, and 5 total scores. Philadelphia's secondary is suffering from injuries early in the season and Cruz is going to continue to dominate, till proving to be Eli Manning's favorite target. This game is going to be a shootout to prove which team is truly the worst in the NFC East. The Eagles are allowing 225 receiving yards per game to wide-outs, and 2 touchdowns.

Start Josh Gordon vs. Bills. Buffalo has allowed a league-high 936 yards to wide-receivers this year, and Brian Hoyer has seemed to have found his wings under Rob Chudzinski.

Fantasy Football: Week 5 start 'em sit 'em RBs

Start Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Rams. This is the week all you MJD owners have been waiting for. The Rams are allowing 130 rushing yards per game to opposing running backs and the Jaguars are going to realize that their best offensive weapon for the last 8 years is still hangin' around, even if the Jags aren't.

Start Ray Rice vs. Miami. The Dolphins are giving up almost 75 receiving yards per game to opposing running backs, in addition to over 85 yards per game on the ground. It seems as though John Harbaugh is moving on from the delusion that Joe Flacco will carry the Ravens back to the playoffs. It's time for Rice to resume his place as the rock that Baltimore can ride. I'm expecting at least 20 fantasy points in PPR formats from Rice this week.

Cadence Call: Thursday night Week 5 game preview

Welcome to Cadence Call where I give you my bootleg breakdown for each game in the AFC East and AFC North.  In case anyone forgot, the Cleveland Browns host the Buffalo Bills Thursday night.  Both teams are riding the winning wave with the Bills intercepting their way to victory over the Baltimore Ravens last week while the Browns won a snoozah over a suddenly very inept Cincinnati Bengals team.  Each team at 2-2 is still alive in their division so this Thursday night nugget should be an entertaining affair.

In the murky pond that I live in Thursday night was always a pre-game for the weekend so what better way to start the weekend off than a football contest between teams from the AFC East and AFC North who have a chance to make a statement to their division and the rest of the NFL.

So grab yourself a few bottles of Spaten Optimator and a light up a Diesel Unholy Cocktail and kick this weekend off right.

Sit back, relax and enjoy this Thursday night clash in Cleveland.

Dolphins' Cameron Wake uncertain with knee injury

Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake told reporters that he felt better following yesterday's practice, but he is still unsure if he'll be able to suit up this weekend against the Baltimore Ravens, according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

Wake is dealing with a knee injury that's limited him through the week. It's the same ailment that kept him sidelined Monday night against the New Orleans Saints, and there's a chance it holds him out when the Dolphins attempt to collect their fourth victory of the season this weekend against the Ravens.

Packers injury updates: Clay Matthews, Jermichael Finley, James Starks

The Green Bay Packers have several key players on their injury report entering this weekend's matchup against the Detroit Lions. Meanwhile, Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel reports that running back James Starks is expected to miss the next couple of weeks due to his knee injury.

Fantasy Football: Week 5 start 'em sit 'em QBs

Start QB Terrell Pryor vs. Chargers. Assuming Pryor gets the start, he's definitely the hot hand in black and silver. The Chargers secondary has proven themselves as one of the worst in the league, allowing a 69% completion percentage to opposing QBs and a staggering league-high 26 fantasy points per game.

Start QB Eli Manning vs. Eagles.

Start QB Matt Stafford vs. Packers. In his last three games against Green Bay, Stafford has scored 8 times and averaged over 350 yards per game. Should be a good day for fantasy players on both teams as this game is likely going to be a shootout.

Cowboys' Miles Austin improving; questionable to play

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin missed yesterday's practice as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury. The ailment kept him out of last weekend's contest against the San Diego Chargers, but head coach Jason Garrett told reporters -- including Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas -- that Austin is showing signs of improvement.
"Miles is a good player and he's off to a really good start," Garrett said. "He's been as healthy as he's been the last couple of years, up until hurting the hamstring and being out last week. He's made a lot of plays for us, underneath plays, a couple of plays down the field, he's certainly a good player. He starts and he has a big role on our team for a reason."

Raiders' Terrelle Pryor will start, Matt Flynn demoted

The Oakland Raiders have announced that Terrelle Pryor will be their starting quarterback this week, which means he has passed all his concussion tests.  Pryor was originally the starter before suffering a concussion two weeks ago.  Pryor gives the Raiders offense a dynamic dual threat, he can make plays with his feet and his arm and has played well so far this season with not much help.

Fantasy Football: Week 5 hot waiver moves

If we really think about it, there aren't going to be a lot of bye-week dilemmas this week. Let's try looking at it this way: The combined record of the four teams not playing in week five is 2-14. There aren't too many fantasy studs on the Vikings, Steelers, Buccaneers, and Redskins who are going to destroy your team by not playing this week. If you happen to be playing against that guy whose actually going to have to bench Adrian Peterson this week; good for you. If you are having to compensate for some injuries or are simply filling some roster holes, here's a look at some names who could be riding the waiver wire in your league.

Buccaneers Update: Josh Freeman benched not just because of performance

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers season has been quite the roller coaster ride.  If you’re a Bucs fan its one of those rides that just makes you puke no matter what.  From the outbreak of MRSA in the locker room during the preseason to the removal of the captain’s “C” on “franchise quarterback” Josh Freeman’s jersey to his eventual benching for rookie Mike Glennon.  Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the dismal 0-4 start to the season.

Freeman was benched in favor of Mike Glennon in Week 4 which came as little surprise after the Bucs had stripped Freeman of his captaincy before the season opener.  Many have questioned this call since Freeman is only 25-years old and was a former 1st round draft pick.  Perhaps his performance wasn’t the only reason that Glennon is starting.

According to Chris Mortensen, Freeman is in stage one of the NFL’s drug program.  Though, this can be a variety of substances, Freeman argues that he has a prescription for Adderall to treat his ADHD.  While this may be true, in 2012, Freeman had a hot test that revealed Ritalin in his system, a substance similar to Adderall.

"... [T]o assure everyone that the error was a one-time mistake, I agreed to be voluntarily tested in the 'NFL Program,' " Freeman said in the statement.
"Since that time, I have taken and passed all 46 drug tests I've been given, which test for every drug and banned substance imaginable," Freeman said. "I agreed to allow such testing to be done at my workplace [team facility] because I spend all of my time there and I have nothing whatsoever to hide or be embarrassed about."
"Unfortunately, it appears that some people who may have noticed the testing at my workplace have made hurtful and incorrect assumptions and chosen to disseminate inaccurate and very disturbing information," Freeman said.

Since being benched, Freeman has requested to be released and General Manager Mark Dominik has called numerous teams to attempt to trade the former starter.  The only issue with trading Freeman, especially five weeks into the season is that he is still owed $6 million and would cost a team a draft pick as well.

There is probably more to the story and we are hoping more is revealed in the upcoming days.  We will report on any information as it becomes available.
