Cadence Call: Thursday night Week 5 game preview

Welcome to Cadence Call where I give you my bootleg breakdown for each game in the AFC East and AFC North.  In case anyone forgot, the Cleveland Browns host the Buffalo Bills Thursday night.  Both teams are riding the winning wave with the Bills intercepting their way to victory over the Baltimore Ravens last week while the Browns won a snoozah over a suddenly very inept Cincinnati Bengals team.  Each team at 2-2 is still alive in their division so this Thursday night nugget should be an entertaining affair.

In the murky pond that I live in Thursday night was always a pre-game for the weekend so what better way to start the weekend off than a football contest between teams from the AFC East and AFC North who have a chance to make a statement to their division and the rest of the NFL.

So grab yourself a few bottles of Spaten Optimator and a light up a Diesel Unholy Cocktail and kick this weekend off right.

Sit back, relax and enjoy this Thursday night clash in Cleveland.

Cadence Call regular season record (10-13).  Now, on to the game previews.

Buffalo Bills (2-2) @ Cleveland Browns (2-2) (Thursday Oct 3, 8:25PM ET)

*Line: Cleveland -4

Weather: Showers and thunderstorms possible, low around 63°F

Most talking heads on sports talk radio view Thursday night football as a bad product.  Although most games this year on Thursday night have been regurgitated dog food, this showdown will be an entertaining football contest.

Browns magic man, quarterback Brian Hoyer, has taken charge since coming in for the injured Brandon Weeden and has won back-to-back games.  Hoyer is getting the ball out fast and going though his progressions well.  He has been sloppy at times tossing a few interceptions, but he has won and that is what counts.

Hoyer is aided by Browns tight end, Jordan Cameron, who leads all TEs in receptions and is tied for receiving touchdowns.  It is also no surprise that Hoyer’s instant success is linked to the return of wide reciever Josh Gordon.  Gordon has 14 catches from Hoyer for 217 yards and a touchdown. In the past two games, Hoyer has thrown 92 passes, 50 of which have went to the Gordon-Cameron tandem.  There are other players involved in the Browns’ passing attack such as Davone Bess and running back Chris Ogbonnaya, but is it obvious that Hoyer favors Gordon and Cameron.

Look for Hoyer to continue to go to his dynamic duo even in the possible Cleveland rain Thursday night as the Bills continue to play with a beat up secondary.  The Bills could be without Jairus Byrd and Leodis McKelvin.  The Bills are still sky high from intercepting Ravens QB Joe Flacco five times last week.  One cannot argue the great job new defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, is doing in Buffalo.  The Bills are ranked first in the NFL in interceptions with nine and they are tied for fourth in the AFC in give/take, taking nine interceptions and two fumbles into Cleveland.

The Browns rank fourth in the AFC in giveaways with six interceptions and one fumble.  Normally, I would say the game falls in this area; the Browns have a tendency to give up the rock, while the Bills like to take it away.  However, the Bills have struggled this season against bigger and faster WRs and TEs and one could argue that Gordon and Cameron will be the best they have faced this year.  In the first four games, the Bills went up against TE Greg Olsen of the Carolina Panthers (seven grabs for 84 yards and a touchdown), Stephen Hill of the New York Jets (three receptions, 108 yards and a touchdown) and Baltimore Ravens Torrey Smith (five receptions, 166 yards and a touchdown).

The game comes down to this, can the Bills depleted secondary pull off their own magic for another week and stop Gordon and Cameron?  I want to say they can and my instincts say they will.  Vegas have Cleveland -4 and at home, that is a respectable spread for the 2-2 Browns.  This is a difficult game to pick because the rainy weather might muck up the passing game for both teams.

Nevertheless, Cleveland hero Jim Brown is honored before the game and the Dawg pound will be whooping it up with the atmosphere inside and outside the stadium being electrifying.  That carries over into the game so take the Browns minus the points and watch Gordon and Cameron continue to shine.  Browns herd the Bills, 24-17.
