Jets Rumors: Paycut for Santonio Holmes

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the cash strapped New York Jets will attempt to restructure the contract of Santonio Holmes.

Having already cut experienced roster veterans in Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith.  The Jets instead of cutting, are looking to ask another game-maker to restructure his contract to make available more cap room for the forthcoming free agency market.

Holmes missed 12 games of the 2012 season owing to a foot injury.  This year he is scheduled to obtain $11m base, $7.5m of which is guaranteed.  The $11m mark would make most teams blush, but also reason enough to not cut the noted playmaker and former Super Bowl MVP winner.

Of course, this may lead to a game of call my bluff, as Holmes may well sit out due to any renegotiation and dare the Jets to cut him.  Holmes knows if he is cut he will only be entitled to $7.5m, so this slight window of opportunity could lead to the restructured contract.

The Jets need cap room and cash to entice players, however, they still need options on offence.
