Following on from a piece by my colleague Blaine Blontz on the Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly not pursuing Alex Smith in free agency, there is cause for optimism in the camp in regards to the future of Blaine Gabbert, who is reportedly going to vie for the starting job, writes Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.

Whether it's the coaching staff building Gabbert up or the front office expressing hope for improvement, Gabbert remains in the Jaguars' 2013 plans. But they also recognize his role has changed. Around the League asked Jaguars general manager David Caldwell if Gabbert is considered the incumbent starting quarterback or whether he'll have any edge in a quarterback competition.
"It's going to be a wide open competition," Caldwell said at the NFL Scouting Combine
Caldwell was also quick to point out that Chad Henne remains on the roster, and the Jaguars are looking to boost competition by way of free agency and through the 2013 draft in key positions throughout the organisation.
In some circles, such comments may well be gratifying, however it is not clear as to whether the Jaguars are still fully behind their quarterback, and who will snap the first ball under centre in the 2013 season.
