Reggie Bush Injury: Dolphins RB Questionable Against Cardinals

The Miami Dolphins are listing running back Reggie Bush as questionable for today’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals.  While it’s unclear if Bush will be able to suit up, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com reports that signs point to the dynamic back playing against the Cardinals.

Bush injured his knee during the second quarter of Miami’s 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Jets Sunday.  While some initially feared the worst, tests performed Monday showed no serious damage to the running back’s knee, and Miami listed him as questionable entering the weekend.

Following a so-so week 1 against the Houston Texans, Bush broke out in a big way against the Oakland Raiders in week 2, rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.  He had tallied 61 yards on 10 carries in the first half of last Sunday’s game against the Jets before exiting.

If Bush is unable to go against the Cardinals, Daniel Thomas and rookie Lamar Miller will see more action for the Dolphins.

Matt Forte Injury: Bears RB Questionable Against Cowboys

There is still a chance that running back Matt Forte returns to action when the Chicago Bears take on the Dallas Cowboys Monday night, according to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com:

Forte was listed as questionable on the team's injury report released Saturday. Forte practiced this week and declared himself ready to return. Bears coach Lovie Smith has been more guarded, however, saying as recently as Wednesday that his running back "still has a long way to go."

Forte sustained his right ankle injury during the Bears’week 2 loss against the Green Bay Packers.  Many around the game thought the injury would cause him to miss significant time, as it was initially labeled a high-ankle sprain, but Chicago later refuted these reports.  Even so, he was expected to miss several weeks due to the sprain, so a return would be considered a serious win for the Bears.

If Forte is unable to go tomorrow against the Cowboys, Michael Bush will once again receive a majority of the careers for Chicago.

Bills Injury News: C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson

Though both were listed as questionable entering Sunday, the Buffalo Bills may have their two top running backs, C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, when they take on the New England Patriots today.

When the initial injury report was released Friday, Bills coach Chan Gailey told reporters that both Spiller and Jackson had a “legitimate” chance to play today, according to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com.

Jackson, recovering from a knee injury, and Spiller, who’s dealing with an ailing shoulder, were each able to practice Friday.  It was Jackson’s third-consecutive practice and Spiller’s second.  While both could see the field against the Patriots today, Hanzus is reporting that Jackson is the more likely of the duo to suit up.

After Jackson’s week 1 injury, Spiller emerged as an extremely productive running back.  It remains to be determined how the Bills will split carries between the two once they both return to the field.

Patriots Injury News: Julian Edelman, Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be without two of his top options against the Buffalo Bills, as wide receiver Julian Edelman (hand) and tight end Aaron Hernandez (ankle) are listed as out.  The line in front of Brady is also banged up, as left guard Logan Mankins wasn’t able to make the trip to Buffalo.

Still, Brady will have one of his favorite targets to look to as tight end Rob Gronkowski was able to make the trip and will suit up against the Bills.

Edelman is still dealing with a hand injury that caused him to miss the entire week of practice.  Hernandez sustained his ankle injury during the Patriots week 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and it’s not clear when he’ll be able to return to action.

For this reason it would have been devastating if Gronkowski was unable to go for the Pats.  He suffered a hip injury during practice Friday and New England had him listed as questionable, but it appears the injury is not serious.

Chiefs Injury News: Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston, Dexter McCluster, Peyton Hillis

It’s unclear what the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense will look like today when they take on the San Diego Charges, as several of their key contributors are listed as questionable to play.  This is true of wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (groin), Steve Breaston (knee), and Dexter McCluster (elbow), while running back Peyton Hillis (ankle) entered the day listed as doubtful by the club.

Even though he’s listed as questionable, Bowe is expected to suit up and play against the Charges.  His groin injury that limited him in practice Friday doesn’t appear to be significant, but you have to wonder if it will impact his performance.

It also wouldn’t be surprising to see Breaston and McCluster play for Arizona today.

Hillis didn’t practice all week and his chances of playing against the Charges aren’t looking good.  Tight end Kevin Boss is the only Chiefs player that’s been ruled out at this point.

Giants Injury News: Hakeem Nicks, Ahmad Bradshaw

While the New York Giants will be getting running back Ahmad Bradshaw back from a neck injury Sunday during their primetime contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team is listing wide receiver Hakeem Nicks as doubtful.

Nicks missed last Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to a knee injury, but most expected him to return this weekend after the additional time off.  However, it’s not clear that the talented wide out will be able to join his teammates against their NFC East rivals.

Bradshaw says the inflamed disk in his neck that kept him out of the Carolina game is no longer an issue and that he’ll be ready to go Sunday night.  He doesn’t expect to be limited tomorrow, but he will likely split time with running back Andre Brown, who performed brilliantly as Bradshaw’s fill-in last week.

Linebacker Keith Rivers and offensive tackle David Diehl, who are each dealing with leg injuries, will not be able to return against the Eagles.

Steven Jackson Sits Out Another Practice

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson (groin) missed his second consecutive practice on Thursday, according to ESPN.

Jackson picked up the injury in week 2 against Washington, and struggled the next week in Chicago.

Daryl Richardson is next in line if Jackson is held out or limited on Sunday's game against Seattle.

Jackson has been a durable running back in his career. He has only missed two games in the last three seasons.

Player Safety Should Bring Back Refs

Reports on Wednesday indicate that the NFL Ref lockout could be coming to an end. The refs might be back at work this weekend to replace the replacement refs.

One of the biggest stories of the young season has been the refs who get criticized in the moment, and then people complain on social media about the league not paying normal refs.

Blown calls, delays in the game and player safety are all issue with replacement refs.

The normal refs missed many calls last season and delays in the game happen. However, the NFL must bring back the normal refs because of player safety alone.

The replacement refs have been equivalent to substitue teachers, as Monday Night Football announcer Mike Tirico eloquently put it. There are helmet-to-helmet hits that go unpenalized, physical hits on the quarterbacks and extra curricular activities after the play. Players know they can get away with a lot and take advantage of the situation.

Bad calls happen, like the one that occurred on Monday night in Seattle. The reality is it was only a regular season game early in the year.

The bigger issue of the replacement refs is the safety of players in a league that has made it a priority. The consequences of head injuries has casted a dark shadow over the sport of football. The longer there are replacement refs, the better chance of more NFL injuries.

Ahmad Bradshaw to Return Sunday

New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw will return to the starting lineup on Sunday against Philadelphia, according to ESPN New York.

Bradshaw sat out last Thursday's game in Carolina with a neck injury. He suffered the injury early in week 2 against Tampa Bay.

Bradshaw could be eased back in with fellow running back Andre Brown coming off a career game. Brown rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns in a victory over Carolina.

The Giants are known for using multiple running backs in the past. They did it with Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs in the early Tom Coughlin regime. When Barber retired, Jacobs shared carries with Bradshaw.

Fred Jackson is Probable For Sunday

The Buffalo Bills, who were reeling on Sunday when running back C.J. Spiller left the game in Cleveland with a shoulder injury, received encouraging news on Wednesday when it was reported that Fred Jackson rated his own chances of returning to action this week as "70 to 75 percent".

Per Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News, coach Chan Gailey said, "I'm very optimistic."

Spiller's injury doesn't appear to be as bad as first feared, but he's unlikely to be risked this week against New England, especially if Jackson does play, as expected.

Spiller entered Week 3 as the NFL's leading rusher and was averaging an astonishing 10.1 yards per carry, a pace that that was never going to be maintained. However, Buffalo didn't envisage him being stopped in his tracks quite the way he was.

Third choice running back Tashard Choice replaced Spiller in the second quarter against the Browns and the Bills' running game, perhaps a little surprisingly, never missed a beat as he gained 91 yards on 20 carries. That was everything Buffalo could ask for as they'll need all the rushing help they can get this week against a Patriots defense giving up just 82 yards per game on the ground.

Jackson sprained his Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) in Week 1 at the Jets, a game in which Spiller was the only bright spot for the Bills.

Matthew Stafford's Status Unknown

Detroit Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford is not revealing the extent of his that he suffered on Sunday, according to mlive.com.

Stafford left Sunday's game against Tennessee with a leg injury in the fourth quarter. Detroit welcomes Minnesota to Ford Field in week 4.

The 2009 first overall pick has been injury prone in his NFL career. He sustained a knee knock in his rookie year and injured his shoulder in 2010. Stafford played a full season in 2011.

Shaun Hill will start at quarterback if Stafford misses anytime. Hill extraordinarily led Detroit into overtime before falling to Tennessee. Hill threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns including a hail mary as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Reggie Bush and C.J. Spiller Get Good News

The NFL's two leading rushers going into week 3 went down with first half injuries on Sunday.

Miami Dolphins' Reggie Bush and Buffalo Bills' C.J. Spiller both were sidelined and didn't not return to their games. Both received encouraging news after test were done.

Bush did not suffer any structural damage to his left knee against the New York Jets, according to ESPN.com. He could play in Miami's next game against undefeated Arizona. If Bush misses a game, then expect Daniel Thomas to take the reigns as the featured back.

Spiller sustained a strained AC joint. The injury looked worse at first, but it isn't a separated shoulder. Spiller is expected to miss one-to-two weeks, according to Jason La Confora of CBS Sports. Spiller started the year as a back up to Fred Jackson, and the door opened for the former Clemson running back when Jackson sprained his LCL in week 1. Jackson is going to practice this week and hopes to be ready when Buffalo faces New England on Sunday. Tashard Choice is the other running back for the Bills, and he ran for 91 yards on 20 carries in relief of Spiller in a victory at Cleveland.

Darrelle Revis Out for the Season

New York Jets' star cornerback Darrelle Revis is out for the season, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Revis tore is ACL on Sunday against Miami and will need surgery. Ryan made the announcement at a Monday press conference.

Revis is a key part to a strong Jets defense and is one of New York's most valuable players. He is a cornerback that can cover, tackle and make big players.

Revis' counterpart Antonio Cromartie will likely take on the responsibility of covering teams top wide receivers.

Darrius Heyward-Bey Injury: Raiders' WR Stable After Being Knocked Out

The Oakland Raiders received a scare today when wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious during the team's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Heyward-Bey was hit by Steelers' safety Ryan Mundy in the end zone helmet-to-helmet.  Heyward-Bey lay motionless for a few moments before eventually being carted off the field.  He gave a thumbs up to the crowd while strapped to the cart.

According to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review sports columnist Dejan Kovacevic, Heyward-Bey is stable and the injury does not appear to be as serious as it looked on the field.
Heyward-Bey has seven receptions this season for 84 yards.  He had a break-out season last year for the Raiders when he caught 64 balls for 975 yards.  Heyward-Bey was drafted seventh overall by the Raiders in 2009.  He has 1,549 career yard with Oakland.

The Raiders went on to beat the Steelers 34-31.  Heyward-Bey's status for next week's game against the Denver Broncos in Denver.  The Raiders will be looking to pull to 2-2 in the AFC West.  They trail the San Diego Chargers who are 2-1 on the season.

Ryan Mathews Could Give Chargers an Edge

The San Diego Chargers might be getting a big boost to their offense on Sunday. Chargers coach Norv Turner expects that running back Ryan Mathews (fractured clavicle) will make his season debut against Atlanta, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Chargers lost top wide receiver Vincent Jackson to free agency so Matthews' work load was going to increase this season. Matthews fractured his clavicle in the first preseason game against Green Bay.

San Diego has started the season 2-0 without Matthews. A combination of Jackie Battle, Curtis Brinkley and Ronnie Brown have filled in at running back. Quarterback Phillip Rivers has played well in wins against Oakland and Tennessee.

Meanwhile each of San Diego's division rivals have shown flaws in their first two games. Oakland and Kansas City haven't won a game, and Denver are 1-1.

The Broncos are a new team with Peyton Manning at quarterback. Denver beat Pittsburgh in week 1 and on "over reaction Monday" experts praised the Broncos as the division favorites. Others who didn't over react knew that Manning had four neck surgeries in the last year and wanted to see more of the former Indianapolis quarterback. Manning threw three first quarter interceptions in week 2 at Atlanta on Monday night. Now there's questions about Manning and the Broncos in general.

The Broncos Monday night struggles make the Chargers the current favorite to win the AFC West. There is still plenty of football to be played, but the return of Ryan Matthews could give the Chargers an advantage in their division.

Greg Jennings' Injury: Packers WR Suffers Setback

Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings returned to practice on Tuesday, giving the Packers a boost ahead of their visit to Seattle for Monday Night Football this week. However, both he and the team suffered a setback on Thursday.

Jennings didn't train today and coach Mike McCarthy, speaking on SiriusXM Radio, said: "He worked the other day (Tuesday) and it didn't go as well as we thought. It's been up and down. I know he’s frustrated and he doesn’t feel like he has a handle on it yet."

Jennings didn't play in last week's manhandling of division rival Chicago, having picked up a groin injury during the fourth quarter of the Week 1 defeat to San Francisco. Clearly, he wasn't missed against the Bears, but Aaron Rodgers would like to have his No. 1 receiver available for a difficult trip to the Pacific Northwest against an opportunistic Seahawks secondary.

Seattle will fancy their chances against the Packers regardless of whether Jennings plays or not. Green Bay, however, will fancy their chances a lot more with him in the lineup.

Jennings caught five passes for 34 yards in Week 1, numbers that would ideally need to be improved upon on Monday night.

NFL Injury Report: New York Giants vs. Carolina Panthers

The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers have the undesirable draw of the short week.  To further their issues, each team is dealing with injuries to multiple key players.  The Giants have already ruled several stars out, while the Panthers have a few key contributors listed as questionable for tonight’s contest.

New York was able to pull off a come-from-behind victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend, but they didn’t exit the contest unscathed.  The Giants will enter their primetime matchup with the Panthers without starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw, offensive lineman David Diehl, and top wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.

Beyond these three well-known players, New York will also be without wide receiver Domenik Hixon and defensive end Adewale Ojomo.  Cornerback Michael Coe is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, while linebacker Keith Rivers, running back Da’Rel Scott and cornerback Prince Amukamara are all probably for tonight’s game.

The Panthers only have one player that’s been ruled out at this point, offensive lineman Mike Pollak.  However, Carolina has several players, including offensive lineman Byron Bell, linebacker Thomas Davis, safety Colin Jones and running back Jonathan Stewart listed as questionable.  Linebacker Jon Beason, offensive lineman Ryan Kalil, and wide receivers Steve Smith and Kealoha Pilares are all probable for the game.

Bears' Matt Forte Injures Ankle in Thursday Night Game

Matt Forte exited the Bear loss against the Green Bay Packers in the third quarter with an apparent ankle injury Thursday night.  Forte was ruled out for the rest of the game and did not return.  The extent of the injury is not yet known.

Greg Rosenthal of NFL.com reports that Forte underwent an X-Ray shortly after the injury, but the results of the X-Ray are not yet known.  Forte was initially listed as doubtful for return after the injury, but shortly after that initial assessment, he was downgraded to out.

Forte had 31 yards rushing at the time of his injury.  He also had four receptions for 49 yards.  The Bears' star running back has struggled with injuries of late.  He will hopefully not leave too large a void for the Bears as the team signed Michael Bush in the offseason.  Bush replaced Forte in last night's game, and he will be available should Forte have to miss any extended amount of time.

In his career, Forte has been relatively durable until last season.  Last season, Forte missed four games.  However, prior to that he had played in all 16 games in each season of his career.

Forte now has 80 yards rushing on the season.  In his career, he has 4,313 rushing yards.  Last year was just the second season in which Forte failed to eclipse 1,000 yards rushing.  In addition to Forte's rushing yards this season, he is averaging 40 yards per game receiving this year.  He averaged 40.8 yards per game receiving last season.

Since the games in which Forte was injured was a Thursday game, he will have plenty of time for rest and recovery.  The Bear do not play again until September 23rd.

Texans List Arian Foster as Game-Time Deciscion

There was a scary development for Houston Texans and fantasy football fans alike yesterday when the team announced star running back Arian Foster would be a game-time decision Sunday.  Texans coach Gary Kubiak told reporters, including Sean Bielawski of CBSSports.com, that Foster’s fate for Sunday’s game would be determined leading up to kick off after the 26-year-old missed Friday’s practice.

Foster left practice early Thursday due to a sore knee. He said he expects to play Sunday and described his injury as "around the knee area."
"It's just kind of a vague description of where the center point of the pain is,” Foster said.

Kubiak said that Foster underwent an MRI Thursday that didn’t reveal anything serious.  He believes his running back could have practiced if “pushed,” but he noted that Houston is “going to be smart with him.”

If Foster is unable to go Sunday for the Texans opener with the Miami Dolphins, they’d turn to backup running back Ben Tate, with Justin Forsett taking over as the club’s second running back.

Cowboys' Jason Witten Doing Alright After First Game

No one knew for sure if Jason Witten would play as the NFL season kicked off with the Dallas Cowboys facing the New York Giants.  Witten had suffered a lacerated spleen in the Cowboys' preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.  He did not have to undergo surgery, but it was still unclear if he would play in the Cowboys' opener.  But he did play - to the delight of his teammates and coach.

"Last night’s game is going to be one that I remember more than any other game that he’s played when I’ve been around him just for all the different circumstances and his approach to it and his determination and a willingness to be a part of it," said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.
According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, Witten was doing "OK" the day after Wednesday's opener.  Archer said Witten reported no problems Thursday after Wednesday's game.  This is a great sign for the Cowboys who rely on Witten so much every season.

The Cowboys won Wednesday night against the Giants 24-17.  Witten was not much of a factor in the game aside from making the Giants defense at least have to think about him and pay attention to him.  Witten caught two passes for ten yards in the game.

In his career, Witten has 698 receptions and 7919 yards.  He has played for the Cowboys since 2003 and has had at least 900 yards receiving in five straight seasons.  This season, he'll look to make it a sixth straight and hopes to help the Cowboys back to the play-offs.  Dallas has not been in the play-offs since 2009.
