The Buffalo Bills, who were reeling on Sunday when running back C.J. Spiller left the game in Cleveland with a shoulder injury, received encouraging news on Wednesday when it was reported that Fred Jackson rated his own chances of returning to action this week as "70 to 75 percent".
Per Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News, coach Chan Gailey said, "I'm very optimistic."
Spiller's injury doesn't appear to be as bad as first feared, but he's unlikely to be risked this week against New England, especially if Jackson does play, as expected.
Spiller entered Week 3 as the NFL's leading rusher and was averaging an astonishing 10.1 yards per carry, a pace that that was never going to be maintained. However, Buffalo didn't envisage him being stopped in his tracks quite the way he was.
Third choice running back Tashard Choice replaced Spiller in the second quarter against the Browns and the Bills' running game, perhaps a little surprisingly, never missed a beat as he gained 91 yards on 20 carries. That was everything Buffalo could ask for as they'll need all the rushing help they can get this week against a Patriots defense giving up just 82 yards per game on the ground.
Jackson sprained his Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) in Week 1 at the Jets, a game in which Spiller was the only bright spot for the Bills.
