No one knew for sure if Jason Witten would play as the NFL season kicked off with the Dallas Cowboys facing the New York Giants.  Witten had suffered a lacerated spleen in the Cowboys' preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.  He did not have to undergo surgery, but it was still unclear if he would play in the Cowboys' opener.  But he did play - to the delight of his teammates and coach.

"Last night’s game is going to be one that I remember more than any other game that he’s played when I’ve been around him just for all the different circumstances and his approach to it and his determination and a willingness to be a part of it," said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. 

According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, Witten was doing "OK" the day after Wednesday's opener.  Archer said Witten reported no problems Thursday after Wednesday's game.  This is a great sign for the Cowboys who rely on Witten so much every season.

The Cowboys won Wednesday night against the Giants 24-17.  Witten was not much of a factor in the game aside from making the Giants defense at least have to think about him and pay attention to him.  Witten caught two passes for ten yards in the game.

In his career, Witten has 698 receptions and 7919 yards.  He has played for the Cowboys since 2003 and has had at least 900 yards receiving in five straight seasons.  This season, he'll look to make it a sixth straight and hopes to help the Cowboys back to the play-offs.  Dallas has not been in the play-offs since 2009.
