UPDATE: Patriots’ Injury Update: Vince Wilfork, Brandon Bolden, Aaron Dobson, Alfonzo Dennard, Zach Sudfeld released

The New England Patriots held on to beat the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night to get to be 4-0 on the season.  However, the Patriots suffered significant injuries to multiple players, such as Vince Wilfork and Aaron Dobson, that will affect how the rest of the season plays out.

UPDATE:

Per Mike Reiss via twitter:

Just confirming what we all new. In addition, Belichick does not usually discuss injuries, which means this one bothers him. Look for an injured reserve designation soon.

UPDATE 10/1/2013 12:35PM EST:

Mike Wilkening of NBCSports reports that Dobson is dealing with back and neck pain but avoided “major damage.” Dobson’s status for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati is still uncertain.

UPDATE 10/3/2013 6:00PM EST

Michael David Smith of NBCSports reports that Vince Wilfork has been put on injured reserve putting an end to his 2013 season.  In addition, the Patriots release tight end Zach Sudfeld.

Apparently, Sudfeld was told to agitate the gravel when the Patriots decided to sign wide reciever Austin Collie.  It also means that TE Rob Gronkowski could be making an appearance sometime soon.

Sudfeld, if he clears waivers, could become a candidate for the Patriots' practice squad.

All Pro nose tackle Vince Wilfork left the game in the first series last night with an apparent foot injury.  I noticed Wilfork could not stand on his right leg and I knew it was a serious injury.  Unfortunately, I was correct.  John Breech of CBSSports is reporting, citing multiple sources, that Wilfork tore his right Achilles tendon and is likely done for the season.

This is a huge loss for the Patriots on the field and in the locker room.  Wilfork is the leader of the team and of the defense.  Joe Vellano filled in admirably Sunday night.  However, what the Patriots do going forward remains under wraps.  Chris Jones is now No. 2 on the depth chart.

Also injured in last night’s contest was rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson who injured his neck reaching for a low throw by Tom Brady.  Dobson was held on the play and took a head shot as he went for the ball bending his neck back.  No penalty was called on the play for either the hold or a shot at a defenseless receiver.  I look for the NFL to review this one.

In the second quarter, running back Brandon Bolden left the game with an apparent knee issue but returned in the second half.  There is no word on the status of his injury.  In addition, cornerback Alfonzo Dennard hobbled off at the end of the game with an apparent ankle injury.  There is no word on the severity of his injury.

Stay with me for updates, as they are sure to come.
