Patriots’ Vince Wilfork thankful for support after injury

The New England Patriots were already racking up significant injuries this season, as the team has been without starting tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Danny Amendola. Now the defense has taken a hit as defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has been lost for the season after suffering an Achilles injury.

In a recent statement (via Pro Football Talk), Wilfork said that he understands that injuries are a part of the game. He added that he’s extremely thankful for the support he’s received since suffering the season-ending ailment.

“I just want to thank everyone for your support and encouragement,” Wilfork wrote. “Bianca is making sure I see all of the comments I wish I could respond to everyone. But please know your words are heard. One thing I know is I signed up to play football. I don’t regret anything that has happened and there is no need to feel sorry about it. I’ve been blessed to only have had one surgery prior to today and that was in high school. I know what signing up to play football means and I know the rewards and risks. This is my job and I will switch positions for now and play the role of patient but that is only temporary. I have so much confidence in our team and know that they will do great and I will be right besides them, maybe not in uniform but in all other ways. Thanks again.”
While the absences of Gronk and Amendola hurt the Patriots, they’ve been able to survive, especially considering they know they’ll be getting the pair back at some point this season. That’s not the case with Wilfork, who is easily the team’s best player on defense. He’s irreplaceable, but it will be interesting to see how New England attempts to fill in for his production.
