With the loss of nose tackle Vince Wilfork to a torn Achilles last week, the New England Patriots could not afford another injury to
a starting interior defense lineman. As Jeff
Howe of the Boston Herald reports, the Patriots lost a winnable game and
suffered another injury at a defensive tackle position with a short depth chart.
New England Patriots defensive tackle Tommy Kelly left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. The injury occurred when Kelly dropped to the ground without drawing any contact while chasing down quarterback Andy Dalton. Kelly returned for one more play but did not see any more action after that.
Kelly after the game told reporters that he will “be all right.”
Defensive tackles Joe Vellano and Chris Jones again saw plenty of snaps and the defense played well holding the Cincinnati Bengals to only 13 points. The loss of Kelly for any length of time could spell disaster to a defense thin at a big position.
However, as cornerback Aqib Talib told reporters after the game players need to step up in times of crisis, “It was an injury, but we’re ‘next man up’ around here. You can’t dwell on that. We’re ‘next man up."
The Patriots need Kelly to return, as the next game is a Sunday showdown with the New Orleans Saints.
In other Sunday game related injury news, running back Leon Washington injured his left ankle in the first half and did not return. Yes, he actually played if you can call it that. Cornerback Alfonzo Dennard left the game in the second half to get his left ankle re-taped and he returned. Safety Steve Gregory missed a few plays after injuring his right shoulder on a tackle and he returned.
