Chargers' Ryan Mathews suffers concussion

San Diego Chargers starting running back Ryan Mathews suffered a concussion last night in a loss to the Oakland Raiders.  Mathews suffered the injury in the second quarter and did not return.  Before leaving the game Mathews had three rushes for eight yards.  Mathews will have to pass the league concussion tests this week before he gets cleared to play.

Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown are the only other two running backs on the Chargers roster.  Woodhead will likely be the feature back if Mathews has to miss any time, but expect Ronnie Brown to get some carries as well.  Woodhead has been a big part of the Chargers passing game early on in the season and will now become a big part of their run game.

Mathews has had his problems with staying healthy in the past.  The Chargers will need him to get healthy and get some production out of the running game.  Phillip Rivers threw 49 passes yesterday and that is too much.  For the Chargers to be successful on offense they need to be more balanced.
