The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a series of unexpected moves this week, as they cut two players who appeared to be fixtures on the roster prior to the start of the season. By now, of course, we all know the long and sad story of Josh Freeman's demise in Tampa Bay, but an under the radar release was perhaps more of a surprise.
The Buccaneers are very thin at the receiver position below Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson, who have both been on the injury report lately. On Tuesday, the team terminated the contract of Kevin Ogletree, a fifth-year veteran from the University of Virginia. Ogletree proved himself to be a very capable slot-receiver while with the Dallas Cowboys from 2009-2012; racking up 730 yards on 57 receptions.
He became an unrestricted free agent during the 2012 off-season, and was free to sign anywhere he wished. Courted by a number of teams, he ultimately chose the Bucs; signing a two-year, 2.6 million-dollar contract. Eight catches and 70 yards later, Ogletree found himself cut amid the turmoil in Tampa. That's when the Detroit Lions pounced, nabbing the receiver a day after his release.
“Who doesn’t want to go play with Calvin Johnson and Matt Stafford and Reggie Bush? It’s a perfect opportunity." Ogletree said, obviously happy to be in Detroit.
Detroit should be a great landing spot for the 26-year-old Ogletree, who has all of the tools to be successful. It could be just a matter of time before he breaks out, and the Lions will be glad they have him when he does. At the very least, he is sure add depth to the receiving ranks, and bide time for the recently lost Nate Burleson, to make a full recovery.
