Texans name Matt Schaub starting quarterback

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak told reporters yesterday that he has decided to stay the course and keep struggling quarterback Matt Schaub as his starter. Kubiak made the announcement during his news conference, admitting that it was a "tough decision."
"It was a tough decision," Kubiak said during the news conference. "Real tough. But I feel like it was the best thing for our football team this weekend."
Describing the decision as tough doesn't say much about Kubiak's belief in Schaub as his starter. The team has lost three consecutive games with Schaub behind center, and his mistakes have been extremely costly. Not only is he turning the ball over, but he's allowing the opposing defense to score points off his turnovers.

Unfortunately for the Texans, they do not have many options behind Schaub as far as replacements go. T.J. Yates is the next man up, and if the team had more confidence in him he could be starting this weekend. He's still relatively unproven, and Schaub is being paid like a franchise quarterback, extending the veteran's leash.

Still, that leash has been shortened, and if Schaub wants to remain the starter he'll have to pick up his game. The Texans had high aspirations entering the season, and they've gotten off to a slow start. There's still hope for the team to make a splash in the playoffs considering the talent they field, but they'll need to get better play out of their quarterback if they have any real hopes of making a deep run.
