The Chicago Bears were hit with some hard news Monday, as they learned that defensive tackle, Nate Collins, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Head coach Marc Trestman said that the injury was in Collins left knee, and that he will have the surgery in a week’s time. “He’ll let it settle for a week, and then he’ll have surgery,” Trestman said. “It’ll be an eight-month injury. Very disappointed.”
A four-year veteran out of Virginia, Collins finally had his first opportunity to start in the NFL, Sunday, and it ended in bitter disappointment. The Bears were already missing Melton, and Stephen Paea, who has had a sprained toe.
Last week, the team brought in two defensive tackles for a workout; Landon Cohen, a fifth-year man out of Kent State, and Daniel Muir, a fifth-year man out of Ohio. Cohen, was signed and took over for Collins in the rotation. Muir remained unsigned but is likely to be brought in once more, now that the depth on the roster is so thin at three-technique. Undrafted free agent Zach Minter was active against the Saints for the first time this season, but he didn’t play.
I envision a trade happening before the deadline to bring in reputable talent to plug the gaping hole up the middle for the Bears. It will be interesting to see how the team handles yet another devastating setback to their defense.

Bears announced DT Nate Collins has a torn ACL and out for the year. The injury decimates an already decimated defensive line that lost Pro-Bowl tackle Henry Melton, just two weeks ago to the same devastating injury.
