Welcome to Cadence Call where I give you my bootleg breakdown
for each game in the AFC East and AFC North divisions. Week 5 in the NFL is when we start seeing
some separation from the teams that will be fighting it out in late December
and early January and teams that will be crying for momma to bring them some
Campbell’s soup.
There is a great group of games this week, which culminates in a Monday night mash-up between the New York Jets and the Atlanta Falcons. Pair these games with a Newburyport Brewing Company Green Head IPA, at 7.2% Alc. By Vol., you will need nothing else. No joke, those flies on the North Shore are that nasty but the beer is incredible.
Remember, you cannot travel into the future with one foot stuck in the past.
Lick it slam it suck it.
Cadence Call regular season record (11-13). Now, on to the game previews.
New England Patriots (4-0) @ Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) (Sunday October 6, 1:00 PM ET)
*Line: Pick’em
Weather: Showers, High near 70°F Chance of precipitation is 80%
The New England Patriots silenced a few of their critics last week with a convincing win on the road over the Atlanta Falcons. With the exception of the last five minutes, which included a fumbled snap by quarterback Tom Brady and a recovered on-side kick by the Falcons, the Patriots played a great game. The Patriots preach, “Play 60 minutes” of football. Against the Falcons, the Patriots played 55. If we learned anything from the Patriots’ win, is that they cannot take their foot off the gas for one play or the game can change before the refs can move the chains.
The Patriots will certainly need to play 60 minutes of quality football in all phases of the game if they want to beat a Cincinnati team that could not get out of its own way last week. The Bengals turned back into the Bungals and played horrible in a loss to the Cleveland Browns. I look for the Cincy Cats to play better as a team and make this matchup a competitive affair.
I am not getting into individual statistics or even weather Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski plays or does not play (reports are that it is unlikely Gronk plays). This game comes down to which team plays as a team for the full 60 minutes. To win, each team will need to be nearly perfect in all phases of the game. This week the Patriots signed former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver, Austin Collie, and released rookie tight end, Zach Sudfeld. Collie may even play, Sudfeld will not (don’t you love that first rate football analysis).
It may rain and Tom Brady is better in the rain (or snow) than most QBs in the NFL, including Andy Dalton. Patriots’ running back Stevan Ridley has not practiced all week so look for LeGarrette Blount to get most of the carries. The Patriots pain train is rolling and the Who Dey crew will not have enough to slow it down. Patriots edge the Bengals 27-21.
Baltimore Ravens (2-2) @ Miami Dolphins (3-1) (Sunday
October 6, 1:00 PM ET)
*Line: Miami -3
Weather: Partly sunny, with a high near 88°F
The Baltimore Blackbirds head south to a steamy Miami to take on the Dolphins. Both teams come off difficult losses last week. The Fish got their tank punched in by the New Orleans Saints and the Ravens threw away a game against the Buffalo Bills.
Both teams need this game. The Dolphins need to prove that they are the real deal and can compete with the New England Patriots for the AFC East title and the Ravens need to keep pace with the Cleveland Browns (yes, the Browns) or they will find themselves in the AFC North cellar, becoming roommates with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I think the key to this match-up is how well each team establishes its running game. Miami's Lamar Miller was averaging six yards per carry against the Falcons before the game went downhill and Miami had to pass to win. In addition, the Dolphins need better pass protection for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He cannot complete a pass from his back, so the offensive line as a whole need to play better.
For the Ravens, they need to get running back Ray Rice more touches and get this little engine going. Joe Flacco continues to struggle in the regular season and it is clear the Ravens' offense needs to rely more on Rice to get some wins.
Vegas have Miami -3. At home in the Miami heat, take the Dolphins minus the points and watch the Fish eat the Ravens 27-17.
New York Jets (2-2) @ Atlanta Falcons (1-3) (Monday October 7, 8:30 PM ET)
*Line: Atlanta -10
Weather: Dome
This Monday night matchup features two teams in need of a win. One could argue that the Jets are the worst 2-2 team in the NFL while the Falcons are the best 1-3 team in the league. The Falcons got their lunch money stolen last week by the Patriots while the Titans pounded the Jets.
This is a big spread with the Falcons -10. I was telling an old Strong Island mate, who has been banished to his sofa by his wife, my initial thought would be to take the Jets with the points. However, the Falcons are raving mad at their poor performance against the Pats last week and I look for Matt Ryan and his birds to take it out on the Gang Green. Look for Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez to have big games this week.
Ranked second in the league in total yards allowed per game, the Jets’ defense continues to keep them in games. However, that number will change come Tuesday morning. There is plenty of spread on this bread Monday night, but take the Falcons minus the points and watch these birds take down the Jets, 31-17.
Pittsburgh Steelers (0-4) Bye Week
Next game: @ New York Jets (Sunday October 13, 2013 1:00 PM ET)
