The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that they have parted ways with veteran safety Will Allen.
The 10-year veteran signed a one-year deal with Dallas over the offseason after spending the last three years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Allen began the season as the Cowboys' starting strong safety but after a tough start to the season, rookie J.J. Wilcox jumped past him on the depth chart. Allen's pass coverage was exposed by Eli Manning and the New York Giants offense in Week 1. Despite beating the Giants 36-31, Allen and the Cowboys secondary gave up 450 yards passing.
Cutting Allen opens up a spot on the Cowboys' 53-man roster. The Cowboys have not yet filled the spot, but they remain hopeful that defensive tackle Jay Ratliff can return from the Physically Unable to Perform list when he is eligible to do so next week. The Cowboys have two safeties on their practice squad in Jakar Hamilton and Micah Pellerin if they wish to fill Allen's void and add depth to their suspect secondary.
