Steelers rumors: James Harrison open to return

Free agent James Harrison’s agent, Bill Parise, told Adam Schefter of ESPN that his client hasn’t closed the door on returning to the Steelers.

Parise added that Harrison would “welcome a call” from Pittsburgh.

The Steelers cut Harrison after the veteran wasn’t willing to take a pay cut this season. Coach Mike Tomlin wanted to keep the linebacker, but the team was uninterested in doing so without Harrison taking accepting a cut to his 2013 salary. It’s been reported that the team offered him a 30 percent cut to his initial $6.57 million salary.

A return would appear to make sense for both sides. Harrison hasn’t received the type of offer he was seeking when initially hitting the open market. The Steelers could certainly use the veteran’s presence – at least for one more year – with the Baltimore Ravens adding Elvis Dumervil to Terrell Suggs.

The question remains how much of a salary can Pittsburgh afford to take on, as they continue to deal with a tight cap.
