The Houston Texans recently extended free agent safety Ed
Reed a three-year contract offer, but the sides are not close to reaching an
agreement, according to John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.
McClain and others are reporting that the Texans’ offer to
Reed was for three years and roughly $4 million per season. The veteran made
over $7 million last year, and he’s reportedly seeking a similar average annual
salary.
However, McClain notes that Reed clearly isn’t garnering as
much attention – or the corresponding contract offers – that he anticipated
entering the offseason. Reed’s agent has spoken with the Texans, but he
continues to gauge interest from other clubs.
The Texans hosted Reed last week, and the trip went well, according
to both sides. Houston is in the market for a safety after they lost their own
free agent, Glover Quin, to the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason.
Beyond the Texans, Reed reportedly has an offer to return to the Ravens. Others teams – including the San Francisco 49ers and New England
Patriots – would like for Reed to visit, according to McClain.
