Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy acknowledged
publically that the team is pursuing a long-term contract extension with
quarterback Aaron Rodgers that would likely be done before the start of the
regular season, according to Tom Silverstein of The Journal Sentinel.
Murphy called a pending extension agreement with Rodgers “a
priority.”
"It's a priority," Murphy said. "I think as an organization, I think we all want to see that get done."
While Murphy doesn’t know where the negotiations between the
team and Rodgers’ agent stand, he did say that coming up with the upfront money
it will cost to sign the quarterback won’t be a problem. A deal between the
Packers and Rodgers could be worth as much as $50 million in guaranteed money,
according to Silverstein.
Rodgers is currently in the sixth year of the seven-year,
$65 million contract he signed in 2008. He is scheduled to make $9.75 million
this year, far below market value for a quarterback of his standing.
