The Detroit Lions are set to host wide receiver Darius Heyward-Bey
today, according to Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press.
Birkett points out that the Lions are in need of a wide out
that can stretch the field opposite All-Pro Calvin Johnson. Heyward-Bey is
known for his speed, as it’s what had most to do with him being selected
seventh-overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2009 NFL Draft.
During his time with the Raiders, Heyward-Bey had 140
catches over four seasons – averaging nearly 15 yards per catch. Last season,
he caught 64 passes for 975 yards. Oakland has admitted that their decision to
part ways with Heyward-Bey had more to do about money than it did production.
The Lions have Johnson and several slot receivers on their
roster, and they could use someone with speed to take the top off the defense.
They will likely face competition for Heyward-Bey, as the free agent visited
with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday.
