If the Denver Broncos retain defensive lineman Elvis
Dumervil into the 2013 season, he’s set to earn $12 million this year. The
Broncos think his deal is “out of wack,” and John Elway told reporters,
including Mark Kiszla of The Denver Post, that they’re hoping to get him to
take a pay cut in order to remain with the team.
"It's not all about dollars. But when it's way out of whack? Then it's so out of whack that you've got to say: That (salary) can't be it. Especially when you look at the market and what's out there now," Elway told me. "It's so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that."
Dumervil and the Broncos face a deadline before his $12
million contract becomes a guarantee. It’s at 2 p.m. this afternoon, and Kiszla
notes that Dumervil will have to take a pay cut or part ways with Denver.
It’s been reported that Dumervil will have to take a 35% pay
cut to remain with the team. If an agreement can’t be reached, the Broncos
could simply cut Dumervil, or they could trade him if they’ve got something
lined up.
