Elvis Dumervil released because of a late fax

The Denver Broncos and Elvis Dumervil had agreed to a reduced salary that would have allowed the team to avoid cutting him.  However, Dumervil's agent didn't get the paperwork in to the Broncos in time and the team had no choice but to cut the defensive end.

According to ESPN league sources, Dumervil's agent faxed in the paperwork at 4:06 PM EST.  Had the Broncos not cut Dumervil by then, his $12 million salary would have been guaranteed.  The team could not afford to allow that to happen, so they were forced to cut Dumervil.

This is what team president John Elway had to say:

"Due to the procedural elements that were involved in executing the new proposal, we imposed a 1 p.m. MDT deadline for a decision, one hour before the NFL's waiver wire at 2 p.m. MDT. Our deadline was clearly communicated to Elvis' representative," Elway said in the statement. "At 1 p.m. MDT, we were informed by Elvis' representative that he declined our offer. We then prepared Elvis' termination notice to officially file his release with the NFL office."
The Broncos say that salary cap restrictions may keep them from re-signing Dumervil now.  It's a strange turn of events.  Six minutes was the difference between Dumervil remaining a Bronco and earning $8 million guaranteed and him being unemployed.
