Broncos rumors: Discussions with Dwight Freeney stall

The Denver Broncos are now targeting pass rusher Dwight Freeney since free agent Elvis Dumervil signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Talks haven’t progressed much recently, and while they’re not dead they are moving at a slower pace, according to Michelle Beisner of NFL Network.

Beisner notes that Freeney is seeking a contract that pays him $6 million per year, and he’s willing to wait for the deal. Denver may be hesitant to meet these demands, as the base contract Dumervil signed with the Ravens was for $5.2 million per year, and he’s viewed as the superior player to Freeney.

Freeney struggled with the Indianapolis Colts’ switch to a 3-4 defense. However – with the Broncos – he would be able to move back to a pass-rushing end position, rather than suiting up as a linebacker.

Beyond Freeney, the Broncos have also been tied to Atlanta Falcons free agent defensive end John Abraham. He’s viewed as the team’s backup plan if they are unable to reach an agreement with Freeney, so it will be interesting to see if they make contact with him sooner or later.
