Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated
that the team is closing in on a contract extension agreement with quarterback
Tony Romo, according to Clarence Hill of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
"Romo, of course, is someone that I expect our staff, our offensive staff, to deploy Romo according to his pay scale," Jones said. "Stay tuned, but he’s going to have high expectations, I promise you that. He is not going to be paid to be a bus driver."
Romo is set to enter the final year of his current contract.
He currently counts $16.8 million against the Cowboys’ 2013 salary cap, but an
extension could help ease this number.
The Cowboys and Romo’s camp are reportedly using the $120.6
million contract recently signed by Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco as
a guide in negotiations. Jones wasn’t willing to get into the details of the
potential deal, but he did say that Romo would be a big part of Dallas’ offense
moving forward and his contract will reflect that.
