There is mutual interest between the San Francisco 49ers and
free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay
Area.
Asomugha was recently released by the Philadelphia Eagles
following two disappointing seasons with the team. San Francisco expressed
interest in the All-Pro cornerback before he left the Oakland Raiders to join
Philadelphia.
During his time with the Eagles, Asomugha intercepted four
passes and did not force or recover a fumble. He and the rest of Philadelphia’s
secondary were torched on multiple occasions over the past two years.
The 49ers hope to add a big cornerback this offseason,
according to Maiocco. Asomugha would fit the mold, as he stands at 6-foot-2,
but his recent struggles and age (32) must have teams at least somewhat
concerned.
Beyond the 49ers, the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and
Arizona Cardinals have also expressed interest in Asomugha.
