New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery over the offseason -- which will sideline him through OTAs and mini-camp this spring -- according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Rapoport added that at this time it's unclear when the injury was sustained. However, the Patriots are expecting to have Hernandez back and "ready to go" for training camp.
Hernandez recently told reporters that his goal for the upcoming season was to make it through all 16 regular season games healthy, a feat he's yet to accomplish during his time in the NFL. This mystery surgery doesn't sound like it will prevent him from doing so, as he should be able to at least start training camp healthy.
It was recently reported that fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski elected to push back surgery on his injured forearm. There are questions surrounding Gronk and when he'll be ready to return, so any bad news regarding Hernandez is magnified. However, it doesn't seem like the team is expecting to be without either player by the time the regular season opens.

#Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery this offseason, I'm told, likely knocking him out of OTAs and mini-camp this spring.
