Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler – who’s entering the
final year of his current contract – is willing to play out his remaining deal
in an attempt to post a breakout campaign and sign a megadeal, similar to the
one Joe Flacco recently inked with the Baltimore Ravens. Cutler told reporters –
including Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago – that he’s going to play out his
contract this season.

Cutler on contract: "You’ve got to win games to earn those contracts. I’m in last year obviously. We’ll play it out & see how it goes."

While Cutler appears to be interested in playing out his
remaining contract without signing an extension, the Bears may also be hesitant
to commit the type of money it will require to lock the quarterback up
long-term. Cutler has shown flashes of his high ability, but he’s also been
inconsistent and there are questions surrounding his leadership.
It’s to be determined how Cutler will fit in with the new
Bears’ regime, as he doesn’t seem to be a natural pairing with new head coach
Mark Trestman’s West Coast offense. How Cutler handles the transition under
Trestman will likely determine whether or not he’s back with the team for next
season and beyond.
