While his ability is hard to question, there was a level of
uncertainty surrounding the injured knee of cornerback Darrelle Revis. Even so,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent two draft picks to the New York Jets in exchange
for Revis, and the team is apparently confident in his health. Bucs general
manager Mark Dominik told Peter King of Sports Illustrated that he expects
Revis to be on the field when Tampa Bay opens the regular season against the
Jets.
"Where Darrelle will be on the day we open camp is on the field,'' said Dominik. "And where he'll be opening day is playing against the Jets. That's what I believe."
If the Bucs were not convinced that Revis was healing well
after undergoing ACL surgery, they would not have pulled the trigger on a
trade. Coach Greg Schiano said as much when he told reporters that Tampa Bay
would have sent Revis home if the physical he recently underwent didn’t come
back as they were hoping.
But it did, and Revis is now a Buccaneer. It’s no doubt a
risk, and it will certainly be interesting to see how things play out with the
star cornerback.
