The New York Jets took former West Virginia quarterback Geno
Smith with their first pick in the second round. New York stopped Smith’s
slide, and at the same time the Jets put incumbent starter Mark Sanchez’s
future in question.
The Jets were in contact with Sanchez through the process,
so the selection wasn’t necessarily a surprise. However, it doesn’t mean that
the future of the former first-round pick is any clearer than it would have
been otherwise.
At this point, the Jets have several options when it comes
to Sanchez. They could ask him to restructure his current contract. They could
attempt to trade him, but this could be difficult considering his hefty 2013
contract. Or, New York could ultimately elect to eat $8.5 million guaranteed
and cut ties with Sanchez.
For what it’s worth, Sanchez didn’t immediately say that he’d
want to remain with the Jets. Smith isn’t viewed as an Andrew Luck- or Robert
Griffin III-type quarterback in that he’ll be able to step in immediately. So
Sanchez could remain with New York in order to bridge the gap to Smith. The
Jets could wait until next year to give Smith the keys to the offense, as they
invested a second- and not first-round pick in him.
Whatever the case, it’s clear that the Sanchez era is
nearing an end in New York.
