It’s only a matter of time before the Detroit Lions sign Matthew
Stafford to a long-term contract extension – according to Dave Birkett of The
Detroit Free Sports Press – who adds that talks between the quarterback and
team have “started to simmer.”
The Lions and Stafford have made it clear that there is
mutual interest in reaching a lucrative, long-term contract extension. Detroit’s
president Tom Lewand had nothing but good things to say about Stafford last
week.
"There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this off-season than Matthew Stafford," president Tom Lewand said at the team's town-hall meeting last week. "The guy's been in the building every day. He's been living here the entire off-season. He's been working out, he's helped us recruit free agents, he's been involved on a daily basis in trying to get ready for the season, and he would do anything to help us be successful."
Stafford is still only 25, and Birkett expects him to be the
next quarterback contract domino to fall after Green Bay Packers QB Aaron
Rodgers. Talks between Stafford and the Lions never really got started prior to
free agency, but they should pick up as camp approaches.
