Yesterday it was reported that the Arizona Cardinals have a
specific plan of action for talented but troubled defensive back Tyrann
Mathieu, whom they selected in the third round of last weekend’s NFL Draft. Beyond subjecting Mathieu to random drug tests, the Cardinals also reportedly
plan on giving the rookie a contract that includes no guaranteed money.

This isn’t going to fly with Mathieu or his representation,
as agent Pat Lawlor told Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that reports of his client
signing for no guaranteed money were “ridiculous.”
Pat Lawlor, Tyrann Mathieu's agent, on report of no guaranteed $$: "Ridiculous. Not gonna happen. We had no contract discussion with them"
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 29, 2013
Lawlor added that he hasn’t begun negotiations with the
Cardinals, noting that a contract lacking guaranteed money is “not gonna
happen.”
Mathieu’s past is checkered at best, as he’s admitted to
failing multiple drug tests over the years. In fact, he reportedly told coaches
that he failed so many that he’s lost track of the actual number.
While the Cardinals should be able to get away with the
random drug testing considering Mathieu’s history, it doesn’t sound like they’ll
be able to add him on a deal without guaranteed money.
