New York Jets general manager John Idzik has sent out word
that he’s interested in trading down in the upcoming NFL Draft in order to
acquire extra picks, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.
Cimini notes that this strategy makes sense, considering
some of the players that the Jets are expected to target at No. 9 overall
should be available a bit later in the draft. New York’s roster has multiple
holes heading into the 2013 season, and Idzik would like to gather as many
picks as he can in order to address those needs.
The issue could become finding a trading partner. There are
not players will real star power in this draft, meaning there aren’t many guys that
teams will necessarily be interested in trading up for. One scenario could have
a club trading up to select West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, but Cimini
notes that no team with picks 10 to 32 have a glaring need at the position.
While New York could acquire additional picks in this way,
there is also the chance that the Jets will deal cornerback Darrelle Revis to
obtain more selections.
