NFL Draft: DJ Hayden Good As New

On November 6th 2012, during a practice, University of Houston cornerback DJ Hayden was on his way to intercept a pass, when he was hit by teammate Trevon Stewart in midair. Both men had leaped, and Stewart’s knee hit Hayden’s chest. Hayden went down in obvious pain, but nobody could’ve foreseen the type of injury the young corner had just suffered.

He started feeling drowsy, and his eyesight began to fail him. At 22 years old, the talented future star was dying. He had torn the inferior vena cava in his heart. The injury is 95 percent fatal, and threatened to end both DJ Hayden’s career, and his life.

After surgery, and a six-day stint in the hospital, focus for the corner shifted to his recovery. Over the next five months, Hayden worked as hard as he could to get himself into shape so that he could continue his football career.

On March 18th, Hayden was able to show off his untainted talents to 27 NFL teams. He ran the 40-yard dash in an electrifying 4.33 seconds. He impressed a number of those in attendance, and prompted draft wiz, Mike Mayock, to revise his cornerback rankings by elevating Hayden to his top corner, in this year’s draft, according to Chris Wesseling of NFL.com.

Thursday night begins the NFL draft, and Hayden is sure to achieve the greatest accomplishment of his young life. One of his best fits could be with the Denver Broncos, as Champ Bailey’s illustrious career nears its end. The Broncos, however, are sure to face stiff competition with the many teams that will be looking to draft this talented, and very fortunate, young athlete.
