There has previously been interest in New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett. With the NFL Draft beginning tonight, Greg Bedard of The Boston Globe reports that the Pats are fielding calls on Mallett.
According to Bedard, multiple teams have called the Patriots about potentially acquiring Mallett. New England spent a third-round pick on Mallett in 2011, and it's not clear if they are truly interested in trading the reserve. However, Bedard's sources do say that there is a slightly higher chance that Mallett is traded than he's retained.
If there is substantial interest, Bedard believes New England would prefer to receive something higher than a third-round pick for Mallett, considering he's developed in their system for two years. They could opt to deal Mallett for a pick or multiple selections and then take a QB in the draft. Bedard notes that they've been "heavily scouting quarterbacks" leading up to the draft.
