Falcons rumors: Atlanta holding off on Matt Ryan extension

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff told reporters – including D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution – that the team is putting working on quarterback Matt Ryan’s contract extension on the back burner for a few weeks until after the NFL Draft.

“There is no time frame on it right now and I don’t want to keep you hanging on it, but I feel confident that things are going to be taken care of when the time is proper,” Dimitroff said.

The Falcons have been working to reduce salaries over the offseason in order to provide enough cap space to fit a new contract for Ryan. Some of the cuts included veteran running back Michael Turner, defensive end John Abraham and cornerback Dunta Robinson.

Dimitroff said Atlanta is in a “comfortable situation” with its QB, adding that Ryan and the Falcons “are feeling good about making sure that this gets done at the right time.” Whenever a deal is completed, it’s expected to surpass the $120.6 million deal Joe Flacco recently signed with the Baltimore Ravens. There has been speculation that it will land between $127 million and $138 million.
