Earlier this offseason, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg
Schiano said that he hoped to bring in competition at the quarterback position.
This led many to speculate that Schiano isn’t sold on his current starter – Josh
Freeman – but the coach has flip-flopped since his initial comments. However, people
close to Freeman told Stephen F. Holder of The Tampa Bay Times that “just about
everyone at One Buc Place seems onboard” with the team’s current starter,
except Schiano.
There has been talk of the team being divided on the merit
of moving forward with Freeman as their unopposed starter. General manager Mark
Dominik – who selected Freeman in the first-round of the 2009 NFL Draft – is said
to be married to the signal caller. However, Schiano – who joined the team
after Freeman was drafted – doesn’t appear to be opposed to moving forward with
another quarterback.
While the Bucs were reportedly somewhat courting available
players such as Carson Palmer and Matt Cassel this offseason, they haven’t
added anyone that’s seriously going to push Freeman for the starting spot. At
this point, it appears Freeman will be the team’s regular, whether Schiano
likes it or not.
