Are the Cardinals already re-thinking their 3rd round pick?

The Arizona Cardinals took a risk in last week's draft when they selected LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu. The all-star corner is thought to have an almost-infinite upside but his track record is stained by off-the-field issues. Being a slightly undersized CB - 5'9" 186lb - Mathieu would likely fill a need at safety on the Cardinals roster. He has the talent to be a first day starter but Arizona might already be rethinking their draft choice making a deal with the Chiefs that would bring notable slot corner Arenas to Arizona.

Last week the Cardinals 'wowed' the experts when they grabbed Mathieu early in the third round. A few days later, Mathieu's agent publicized that Arizona was refusing to offer Tyrann any guaranteed money. Mathieu is not expected to sign a contract unless the Cardinals budge on this issue.

The Cardinals now apparently are searching for a plan-B. In today's deal, Kansas City will receive Cardinals' starting fullback Anthony Sherman (24 yo) and will send the under-achieving slot corner Javier Arenas (25 yo) to Arizona. Arenas was a former Chiefs' 2nd round pick who had high expectations coming out of the 2011 draft, but just never fit correctly into their system.

It will be interesting to see how this deal shifts off-season depth charts, as well as the tabloid story-line that is the 6-day-old career of Tyrann Mathieu.
