Patriots and Buccaneers swap running backs

Since Patriots second year running back Jeff Demps let slip on a radio interview that his priority was his track & field career, not football, it's been rumored that Demps was not far away from being released or traded. On the other side of the move, LeGarrette Blount's future in Tampa Bay has been anything but certain since the explosion of rookie RB Doug Martin. Martin was drafted 31st overall in 2012 and quickly became the Bucs 'running back of the future'.

Patriots send Jeff Demps and a 7th round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for LeGarrette Blount.

Demps spent his entire rookie season on the IR and may never posses true RB talent. It's been reported that Demps has clocked the 40 yard dash at 4.18 seconds. If you're not sure how fast that is, I suggest you type his name into YouTube. If you are as impressed as I am, I still suggest you type his name into YouTube because his Florida Highlight real is entertaining - to say the least. Demps' 5'7" 175lb build might not make him the ideal RB but he has potential to contribute to any special teams unit.

Blount, on the other hand, had an impressive rookie year in 2010 - 1,000 yards, 6 TDs. The last two years haven't been as fruitful. Blount is a big body with strong legs and pass-block ability. He finds himself on a crowded Patriots depth chart. If he makes the team, he will be used in the red zone and in third-and-short packages.

Demps' contract extends 2 more years making $900,000 combined. Blount is on a one year deal worth $1.75M - $500k in incentives. If Blount makes it through Patriots camp, I'd look for him to receive and extension.

It's worth noting that the Bucs used the 7th round pick (229 overall) to trade up in the 6th round sending the 196th pick + the 229th pick to the Vikings for the 189th selection. With the 189th pick the Bucs add another RB to their backfield - Mike James (University of Miami). The Vikings (who actually reclaimed a pick -229- that was originally theirs, and traded to the Patriots in a deal made in the 1st round) drafted DT Everett Dawkins from Florida St.
