Cowboys' Anthony Spencer out for the season

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer's season has ended after playing only one game. Just two months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Spencer will have to go under once again for a season-ending procedure on the same knee, according to Spencer's agent Jordan Woy.

Doctors believe Spencer will be "100 percent" by either January or February. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told KRLD FM radio (The Fan Dallas) that Spencer may require microfracture surgery. Spencer was inactive for two of the Cowboys three games this regular season, and only played 38 snaps in their 17-16 Week 2 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

At 29 years old and his season over, Spencer's future with the Cowboys is now in jeopardy. George Selvie has played surprisingly well filling Spencer's role as starting defensive end. If Selvie continues to perform at a high level, Spencer's value could become expendable.

The Cowboys owe Spencer $10.627 million in guaranteed salary after putting the franchise tag on him in March. Of the eight players on the franchise tag this season, five of them are injured to some degree, and four of them either have not played yet this season, or could be out for the year.

Had he stayed healthy and productive, Spencer could have looked at earning a fat check with a new contract from the Cowboys or elsewhere in free agency. Now however, Spencer will be perceived as a 30-year old coming back from major knee surgery, which will severely affect the amount of money teams will be willing to shell out for him.
