The Minnesota Vikings lost a pair of starters from their
defense during last night’s preseason contest against the San Francisco 49ers. Cornerback
Chris Cook suffered a groin injury during the first quarter of the game, while defensive
tackle Kevin Williams was forced from the contest by a leg injury during the
third quarter, according to Andrew Krammer of 1500 ESPN.
At this point, there’s no word on the extent of the injuries
suffered by Cook or Williams. Extended absences by either player would impact
the Vikings’ defense. Cook will be counted on as the team’s top corner,
according to Krammer, while Williams is a key cog up the middle for Minnesota.
Williams was injured during what Krammer refers to as a “questionable
block” from 49ers guard Joe Looney. Teammate Jared Allen said that, from what
he understands, “it was a dirty play.” Following the low block, Williams was
walking with a noticeable limp. He ultimately landed in the locker room for
further evaluation.
Cook enters the season viewed as the team’s leader at
cornerback despite the fact that he’s only in his fourth season and hasn’t
started more than 10 games in any of his three years in the NFL. While he was
sidelined, Minnesota replaced him with A.J. Jefferson.
