Saints’ Will Smith exits preseason game with knee injury

New Orleans Saints linebacker Will Smith limped off the field during last night’s preseason contest against the Houston Texans after sustaining what appeared to be a leg injury. Pro Football Talk characterized the ailment as a potential knee injury, and Smith’s status moving forward isn’t clear at this time.

Smith suffered the injury during a play which ended by Cameron Jordan sacking Texans quarterback Matt Schaub. It’s not clear exactly how Smith sustained the injury or what he hurt, and there’s also been no word released regarding the extent of the injury.

More figures to come out early this week on Smith’s status, but it was a good sign that he was able to exit the field under his own power. Under Rob Ryan’s new defensive scheme, the Saints have been converting Smith from a defensive end in their former 4-3 defense to an outside linebacker in their new 3-4 defense.
