There seems to be a reoccurring theme for the New York Giants this preseason. When a player comes back from an injury, another player sustains one. The trend continued in Saturday night's 24-21 overtime loss to the New York Jets.
Cornerback Terrell Thomas took the field for the first time in two years Saturday night. Thomas missed the last two seasons with two ACL tears. Thomas said he was "blessed to be in this situation". Not many players are fortunate enough to be able to play again after tearing an ACL twice.
The injury bug bit the Giants again when safety Stevie Brown had to be helped off the field in the first quarter after intercepting a pass by rookie quarterback Geno Smith. During the interception return, Brown fell to the ground untouched. Brown could not put any weight on his left leg when he was being helped off the field. The team later announced that Brown suffered a sprained left knee, according to ESPN New York.
No timetable pertaining to Brown's return has been announced yet. He will likely undergo an MRI to see exactly how badly he sprained his knee, which should dictate when he will be able to return. If Brown has to miss any regular season action, it would be a serious blow to the Giants' defense which has already been plagued by injuries so far this summer. Brown emerged as a great ball hawking safety for the Giants last season, leading the team, and tied for second in the NFL with eight interceptions. If safety Antrel Rolle is healthy and Brown is not available then Ryan Mundy would likely be the starting safety in his absence.
