Earlier this morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will play Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. That may ultimately prove to be the case, but as of yet Griffin hasn't received medical clearance, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Throughout the offseason, and basically since he suffered his grisly knee injury, Griffin has said that he will return in time to start the Redskins' regular season opener. He appears to still be on track to do so, but before he can get on the field he'll have to be cleared medically. This will come from Dr. James Andrews, the renowned surgeon that performed the operation on Griffin's knee.
It's interesting that Schefter's report came out prior to Griffin receiving medical clearance, which isn't expected to be decided upon until after the team's final preseason contest. Of course, the Redskins could know that Griffin is ready to suit up against the Eagles, but there's been no official word of his clearance.
While it's largely expected that Dr. Andrews will give Griffin the green light, it is at least somewhat interesting that it will come down to his decision. He's the one that said Griffin was OK to continue during last year's playoffs prior to sustaining the knee injury that ended his season.
