The Buffalo Bills have placed veteran wide receiver Brad Smith on Injured reserve officially ending his season due to a rib injury. According to ESPN.com Smith will still receive his $1.5 million dollar salary, which would not have been paid if he was cut. In his two years with the Bills Smith has proven to be a multi talented player by playing multiple positions allowing the team to save valuable roster positions. Heading into the final roster cuts Smith looked like the odd man out in the Bills wide receiver rotation.
Smith played mostly on third down catching 14 balls for 152 yards and two touchdown's in the 2012 season. Perhaps his largest contribution has been as a return specialist returning 33 kickoffs for 778 yards and averaging 23.5 per return. Prior to being placed on IR Smith caught three passes for 12 yards and a score. All signs point to Smith's career with Buffalo coming to an end after the change of leadership in Buffalo.
Bills first year head coach Doug Marrone added two wide receivers via the 2013 NFL draft, selecting Robert Woods in the second round and the speedy Marquise Goodwin in round three. Add in second year WR T.J. Graham who along with Goodwin will also return kickoffs. Don't forget to add in standout wide receiver Steve Johnson and that moves Smith down to at least the fourth WR on the depth chart. The new coaching staff also made it very clear they don't value Smith in the wildcat strictly letting Smith see snaps at WR during training camp.
