The New Orleans Saints acquired Veteran Linebacker Parys Haralson from the San Francisco 49ers. New Orleans gave up a conditional 7th round draft pick for Haralson hinging on the fact he makes the team. I know I know why is this even a story? For no other reason than Haralson can flat out play. In six seasons Haralson amassed 145 tackles 21.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Frank Gore made these comments after news of the trade broke.
Haralson is returning from a torn left triceps that kept him out of action for the entire run to the Super bowl. New Orleans provides a great scenario for Haralson where new Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan lacks depth. Starting Linebacker Will Smith is already lost for the season due to an knee injury, and fellow linebacker Victor Butler has no time table for his return from knee surgery. Look for Haralson to come in and not only fill the void but also excel in doing so.
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton returns to the helm after being suspended for the entire 2012 season. He will look to resurrect a team that looked lost without him and a defense that was ranked dead last in the league without former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was also suspended the entire season for his roll in bounty gate. Two certainties for this team is that Drew Brees will yet again be torching opposing defenses and first year defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will have his players playing physical and flying around the field. Don't expect to see the 2012 Saints week one if Haralson and company can hold the defense together Payton will have the Saints pushing Atlanta for the NFC South title.
