Bears' D.J. Williams injures calf muscle

The Chicago Bears’ transition plan from retiring linebacker Brian Urlacher may have to be re-written.  Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that Bears linebacker and Urlacher replacement, D.J. Williams, injured his right calf muscle at the start of Wednesday’s practice session.  Williams was in a walking boot later in the day.

Williams signed a one-year contract with the Bears after nine seasons with the Denver Broncos. The Bears announced Williams is “week-to-week.”  However, this writer knows that when a NFL team does not announce a player will be out “day-to-day” but “week-to-week” (as is the case with Williams) the injury is more serious.  This could mean more playing time for rookie linebacker Jon Bostic.

Bostic is a second-round pick from Florida who moved up to the first teamers in base defense packages and worked with the two’s in nickel situations.  Bostic is trying to make the most out of his Wally Pipp* opportunity.  Looking at it as a chance to compete, Bostic told reporters, “I really don’t look at it as being with the one’s or the two’s.  It’s a chance to show what I can do.”

The extent of William’s injury is yet to be determined and if Bostic starts to impress, the team will have to seriously consider giving Bostic “on the job” training.

As Biggs points out, in week three of the 2000 season, none other than Brain Urlacher replaced Bears linebacker Barry Minter and the rest is Bears history.  By no means am I saying Bostic is Urlacher.  However, has the ghost of Walter Clement “Wally” Pipp descended on Chicago?  Has it ever left?  Born on February 17, 1893 in Chicago, Illinois, you guessed it, a one Wally Pipp.

* The story of Wally Pipp is one of legend.  As the story goes, Pipp a starting first baseman for the New York Yankees from 1915-1925, asked out of the line-up on June 2, 1925 and was replaced by little known Lou Gehrig.  Gehrig went on to play 2,130 consecutive games for the Yankees and became one of the greatest players of all time.  Pipp never saw the field again for the Yankees and was shipped to the Reds in 1926.
