In an effort to ensure that veteran running back Arian
Foster and safety Ed Reed are available for the regular season and able to make
an impact for the team, the Houston Texans have placed both players on the
physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start training camp, according to
Dan Hanzus of NFL.com.
Neither move is surprising, as both Foster and Reed were
known to be dealing with injuries. Foster sustained a strained calf during
spring workouts, while Reed continues to recover from hip surgery he underwent
in April.
Hanzus notes that it will be more likely to eventually see
Foster during training camp and the preseason than it will for Reed to suit up
before Week 1. In Foster’s absence, the Texans will give backup Ben Tate a
larger workload during training camp. This could also lead to Tate seeing more
carries this season, as Houston looks to lessen Foster’s workload. The Pro Bowler
reached close to 400 touches in 2012.
Reed will be handled differently, considering his injury and
age, according to Hanzus. He could be given the entire training camp and preseason
to rest his ailing hip in hopes of having him available for the regular season.
In his place, D.J. Swearinger will see more time.
